The Savannah Evening Press notes a new Lifelong vacuum cleaner with seven easily replaceable parts. If any part fails, including the motor, a new one can be snapped in without tools. The piece humorously suggests a future car with snap-on fenders to further liberate homemakers and house husbands.
John Scott Scarbor aged two, son of Mr and Mrs John H Scarbor of El Dorado, died after wandering into a pasture where horses were kept and was trampled by a horse. He died at an El Dorado hospital.
City police report three weekend accidents. On Friday at 7 50 Douglas Jonston of Texarkana hit Herbert Dodson of Hope at W 2nd and Pine Street. Jonston cited for speeding. A truck turned in front of Mrs Paul Holt who backed into Denzel Goodner of Hope at East Ave A and N Hazel at 4 05. minor damage and no charges. Saturday at 5 30 Kay Presley pulled out at S Main ith St and Betty Aaron of Hope. Presley charged with failure to yield right of way. minor damage.
Hope is being considered for a regular extension center for classes from Southern State College Magnolia. Dr. J A Logan says an organizational meeting for fall classes will be at Red River Vocational Technical School on Thursday September 3 at 6 30 pm. Courses include Freshman English Beginning Math Principles of Economics Introduction to Business and more if demand exists.
Hempstead County Democratic Central committee met in Hope to certify last Tuesday’s results and draw candidate order for the September 8 ballot. Names include Faubus and Bumpers for governor, Riley and Harrell for lieutenant governor, Linyard and Griffin for sheriff, Ward and Shirley for constable. The panel warned that voting in the Republican primary disqualifies voting in the Democratic primary, a felony with penalties up to five years and a $5,000 fine. A list of 422 Republican primary voters will be sent to precincts and judges will challenge any listed names. Signs will warn voters of the law at each precinct.
FBI statistics show bank robberies have nearly tripled since 1960 with 2,000 per year and millions in losses. Notorious cases include a Cincinnati four-victim fatal vault raid and New York’s "Dashing Dan" who robbed 19 banks in three months with notes.
Miss Donna Jo Connelly and Mrs. Betty Fowler depart Little Rock on Delta Flight 416 at 8 37 am Aug 31 with Lt. Gov Britt and Richard C. Butler among others. They travel to Williamsburg to visit Colonial Williamsburg, then to New York City for events at the Plaza and a reception hosted by Miss Anne Bartley. The trip includes a Broadway show and dinner at Sardi's with hostesses linked to Gov. Rockefeller and Arkansas connections.
In a televised speech former Gov. Orval Faubus links his Democratic runoff foe Dale Bumpers to Rockefeller influence. He claims Rockefeller forces funded advertising and headquarters for Bumpers and that both would appeal to the same liberal voters. Faubus warns voters that a November choice pits two liberal lookalikes against each other.
The National Coalition of Concerned Citizens claimed over a million members in 27 states as representatives from North Carolina South Carolina Virginia Florida Georgia Arkansas and Texas met in Atlanta to oppose busing zoning and pairing of schools. They announced a Legal Offense Fund to challenge the courts against the NAACP Legal Defense Fund as part of their campaign.
The AFL CIO COPE endorsed Base Bumpers of Charleston for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Hot Springs Arkansas. J Bill Becker said the decision reflected his stance and labor support while Faubus disputed the endorsement over busing.
Enemy rock et mortar attacks fell for a second straight night from a four month high while casualties dropped sharply. US B52 bombers conducted heavy raids on Laos supply routes as the command logged 40 shelling attacks across South Vietnam in the period. One American and two South Vietnamese civilians were killed and eight Americans along with 13 South Vietnamese were wounded.
Hope fire department responded at 8 18 this morning to Split Hickory Co at 1500 W 3rd where a burner unit caught fire. The blaze was extinguished in minutes.
The Downtown Project Area Committee met at 8 p.m. in the Citizens National Bank Community Room. Officers elected were Luther Hojlaman as Chairman, Harold Douglas as Vice-Chairman, and Ralph Lehman as Secretary. The group set regular meetings for the fourth Thursday each month at the Douglas Building, 720 Texas St. Attendees included Don A. Roberson, Andy Andrews, Forrest Singleton, Mose Verger, Lagrone Williams, James Pilkinton, Charles Wilson, Steve Bader, Robert Lagrone, Harold Douglas, Albert Graves, Ralph Lehman Jr., B. N. Holt, Luther Hollaston, Vincent Foster and Thel Joplin. The next meeting will be September 24th.
President Nixon told CBS Morning News that peace is certain so far as U.S. involvement in Vietnam is concerned. He flagged troop withdrawal with replacement by South Vietnamese and said there is some hope for the Middle East after a cease-fire. He urged no new U.S. initiatives and noted flexible negotiations at Paris.
Ten policemen were shot over the weekend in Philadelphia Los Angeles and Washington D C with one fatality in Philadelphia. In Philadelphia a dawn raid on a Black Panther information center left Patrolman Frank Eckman wounded and 14 arrests made. Sergeant Frank Von Calin was killed Saturday night. James Harrington wounded in a separate patrol incident.

Henderson State College extension course Methods in Audio Visual Education starts August 41 at Red River Vocational School with classes Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m., three college credits possible. Dr. Don Freel and Dr. Emmett Thompson attend the Arkansas Optical Society meeting. Dr. L Kendal Marcott elected president. Hempstead Rescue Unit meets September 1 at 7:30 p.m., Board at 7 p.m. Whitfield Lodge meets Sept 1 at 7:30 p.m. Tommi Lou Watson to compete in Nashville District Junior Miss Pageant September 5 with talent show noon luncheon and entry from Hope, Mame and Becky Huff.
Officials said Connie Lynn Shirley, 26, of North Little Rock drowned Saturday in Greers Ferry Lake while swimming from a boat with her husband Tommy Shirley, 26.
Israel's Golda Meir said Israel faced a strenuous dispute with the United States over Egyptian violations of the Suez Canal cease fire. She cited Egyptian missile moves into the no go zone and warned Israel cannot concede and risk renewed fighting. Cabinet factions clashed over continuing talks with U.N. envoy Gunnar V. Jarring as Moshe Dayan and Haim Bar-Lev briefed and Yosef Tekoah stayed in Israel awaiting the cabinet decision.
Scattered showers developed over the southern portion of Arkansas Sunday and pushed across the state. The U S Weather Bureau says these showers will remain within the state for the next few days. Most showers form in the afternoon and evening as warm humid days continue. A front now in Cabral Sag triggers another wave for shower development in North Arkansas. Highs will reach the lower 80s with lows around the 70s.
