Heat relief and storms sweep across U S Gulf Coast
The Associated Press reports scattered thundershowers cooled parts of the Gulf Coast while eastern regions remained hot and humid. Showers stretched from the Gulf into Missouri and Illinois with dampened areas across the northern plains and New England. Temperatures ranged from the 40s to the 90s, power utilities cut back demand and some cities faced water pressure issues as hydrants were opened. The Nobel Prize in 1970 was awarded to Dr Norman Borlaug for his wheat strain work driving the green revolution.

Rising food costs squeeze school cafeterias nationwide
An Associated Press survey shows districts raising hot lunch prices and trimming items like beef due to higher food costs and the end of federal subsidies. Milk price hikes, subsidy cuts, and beef shortages push prices up from 35 to 40 cents to 45 cents for elementary lunches while secondary meals stay at 40 cents. Officials warn 12 to 15 percent of children may drop out this year as costs rise.
