The National Weather Service says a low pressure system over Texas and Oklahoma will trigger thunder showers in Arkansas by Thursday. The greatest threat is in the southern portion of the state.
Early this week warm air continues to influence Hope with highs near 90 and lows in the 60s and 70s through Thursday. State readings Tuesday were slightly cooler than normal with the upper 80s to low 90s, and forecasts call for partly cloudy skies with scattered thundershowers and highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s.

Detroit Edison Co employees say a River Rouge power plant caused oily soot that coated both sides of the Detroit River for two nights. A union worker described black smoke so thick it could be walked across, with stacks blasting smoke all night until an inspector fixed a dampener at 8 a.m. Monday. The slick covered a 10 mile band into Detroit suburbs and Windsor, Ont., prompting widespread complaints about stained cars, boats, homes and clothing.
A U S military C141 Starlifter crashed 40 miles east of Madrid killing 24 of 25 aboard. The sole survivor, 1st Lt William Ray, 25, was hospitalized with a broken leg. The plane, en route from Athens to Torrejon, exploded on impact as it neared the base.
University of Arkansas president Dr David W Mullins announced a graduate center will open this fall at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Fall term registration will be held from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the Pine Bluff campus. Classes run 6-9 p.m. Mondays for 16 weeks, with three three hour courses offered by the College of Education in the first term.
