LITTLE ROCK AP Dr. G. D. Murphy, director of the Communicable Diseases Division of the state Health Department, said Monday he plans to leave the department because of a personnel situation and alleged mishandling of state funds by some department officials.
Murphy announced his resignation as department director citing alleged overcharges in travel expenses funneled into a fund used to entertain members of the Arkansas congressional delegation. He criticized the handling of federal assignments to disease control programs and described a fear-filled atmosphere among staff, delaying his departure to support a statewide immunization drive.

The Cal-Kraft bag plant and paper mill in Elizabeth Louisiana will shut down due to natural gas shortages. About 1,000 workers are employed at the plants and another 1,000 depend on them for livelihoods. A spokesman cited a Coastal States Gas Producing Co. supply issue despite Louisiana being a major gas producer.
The National Weather Service says a low pressure system will bring southerly winds and more moisture into Arkansas Wednesday and Thursday. Highs near 90s, lows in the upper 60s to low 70s, with thundershowers and a 50 percent rain chance in eastern Arkansas Wednesday.
Nobel laureate Alexander Solzhenitsyn, in a candid interview with Western reporters, says his life is in danger and warns that if he is imprisoned or killed the main portion of his writings could be published posthumously.
