Authorities in Hot Spring County warn that a .38 caliber pistol stolen Sunday is loaded with .357 magnum shells and may explode if fired. The gun and a box of .457 magnum shells were taken from Dr. Robert White of Malvern while he shot targets at a gravel pit nearby.
John T. Truemper Sr. a Helena Arkansas native and former Arkansas comptroller, died in Tyler. He led Mayer and Schmidt Department Store in Tyler since 1958 and once directed the Reconstruction Finance Corp in Arkansas. He lived in Little Rock from 1932 to 1958. West German Foreign Minister Willy Brandt said U S France relations now complicate Bonn’s foreign policy after talks in Washington.
Washington AP reports House leaders from both parties forged a measure to raise Social Security benefits and taxes. If enacted, average family benefits would rise from 145 to 164 monthly. all current beneficiaries would gain at least 12 percent. Single retirees would see 44 to 159.80 monthly, with taxes up to 44 for higher earners. Provisions include health care limits, stricter aid-to-families rules, and work requirements. Also noted are economic indicators supporting Johnson's tax surcharge, while the Senate may shape the bill in conference.

Arkla announces a 103 mile gas transmission project from Logan County Arkansas to Jane Missouri. Federal Power Commission approval granted. Expenditures total about $13.5 trillion, with Arkla selling about 100 million cubic feet daily to Cities Service Gas Co. over 20 years and receiving at least $164 million in minimum revenues. A spokesman for the Arkansas State Police said early Thursday that troopers padlocked five Hot Springs establishments believed to house gambling devices. North Vietnam air missions were down to 111 due to weather while 1,043 Communist soldiers were reported killed. South Vietnamese losses reached 283 dead and 683 wounded.
