Our Daily Bread editor rips into rising Social Security benefits and taxes as signs of inflation while accusing the government of using Social Security funds to finance spending. He condemns long-term debt, calls for citizen vigilance, and warns that government actions hollow out private savings.
Rescue workers found the body of 12 year old Christine Beagles from Moffett Oklahoma in about 18 inches of Arkansas River water near Wildcat Mountain in Crawford County. She had been at a swimming party with eight siblings and their mother Rosie Beagles who had left to return a friend to her home. The body was recovered Thursday, completing the search that began Monday after she stepped into the water.
Don Brown of El Dorado told a civic club that Arkansas needs bond issues to build highways because general revenues won’t cover the cost. He said the state has good credit and that extra tourist traffic could cover bonds, citing a central Arkansas turnpike from Kansas City to New Orleans via Harrison, Little Rock, Pine Bluff and El Dorado.
U S command says air strikes against North Vietnam reached near record levels with B52 raids over the DMZ and into North Vietnam. Communists derail a train near Saigon and snipers attack the capital as ground fighting remains scattered. 181 Communists reported killed. one US F105 shot down but rescued. A translated March 1966 Viet Cong document, seized in Khan Hoa Province by the 101st Airborne Division, shows leaders resolved not to entertain a negotiated settlement while pursuing a mix of fighting and bargaining to hasten collapse of the South Vietnamese regime. The U.S. mission calls the document highly significant.
In Stearns County Minnesota a farmhouse fire killed Loretta Hoskins 29 and three children Julie 7 Darla 5 Linda 1% and a baby David Eli 6 weeks. A wounded farmer, Leo Hoskins, tied to a clothesline post, was found by youths who raised the alarm. David Hoskins 92 was hospitalized in critical condition with gunshot wounds.

An explosion at the Standard Oil refinery in Oregon Township east Toledo injures at least 10 people. No deaths reported as victims with burns are rushed to neighborhood hospitals. The blast, heard throughout Toledo, apparently involved a cracking unit that separates oil and gasoline.

President Johnson schedules a 3 pm EDT news conference as polls show his approval at 39 percent following urban riots and a tax hike plan. Defense officials report safer bombing routes near the Chinese border and a potential new U.S. Army division to stay in the United States.
At South Weymouth Naval Air Station three 60 ton beams in a new hangar under construction collapsed. Two workers died and five were injured as cranes were toppled and rubble buried civilians and equipment. The site, near Boston, had planned dedication of the replacement hangar for September 30.
