The National Weather Service forecasts widely scattered showers and a few thunderstorms through Thursday with a 30 percent chance today 20 percent tonight and Thursday. An upper level trough that brought rain Tuesday has moved eastward and will not sustain significant precipitation.
Arkansas weather remains unsettled with scattered showers likely and a trough influence. Rain reports include Pine Bluff .01 El Dorado .12 Texarkana .11 Fayetteville .21 Jonesboro .19 Little Rock .14 Fort Smith .06. Outlook calls for more showers and thunderstorms Friday into Saturday with temperatures above normal Friday and cooler Saturday.
Arkansas Power & Light Co. filed more testimony with the Public Service Commission regarding its request for a general rate increase. The company says updated studies show the new rates would raise bills less than first projected, with about 10 to 15 percent interim increases for average residential customers before Arkansas Nuclear One comes online and even smaller afterward.
Patterson, Kempstead County representative, spoke to Hope Lions Club about Arkansas special session from June 24 to July 12. He outlined budget committee duties, roughly 30 million dollars appropriated, and how funds boosted textbooks, kindergartens, and school construction. He noted reliance on Federal matching funds, no expected tax increase, and a division in House conservative leanings. Paul Henley attended as guest.
Government farm experts say sharply lower corn yields will yield a temporary drop in beef prices by year end, followed by higher retail meat costs in 1975 as drought drives more cattle to market. If rains restore pasture, prices may hold or rise, altering next year’s beef outlook.

Secretary Callaway warned the all volunteer Army faces a severe test as the next fiscal year begins. He cited a likely 25 000 recruitment gap after draftees depart and said the force must attract more volunteers to prove the model can be sustained. He outlined plans to raise recruit quality and college experience while addressing concerns over racial composition.
The Arkansas Printing Specifications Review Committee approved 33 proposed state printing contracts at a two day meeting in Little Rock. Most contracts cover catalogs and monthly agency publications. Remaining to be approved are about 60 contracts including large general contracts for paper and office supplies.
The Head Start program for Hempstead County on the Guernsey school campus will start September 3, 1974. Parents of children four years old on or before October 1 are urged to register. The program provides medical dental nutritional and social services for low income preschoolers under sponsorship of the Southwest Arkansas Development Council Inc.
