The National Weather Service says scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are likely today in Arkansas with a 40 percent chance. Wednesday should see decreasing showers and storms, then partial clearing with a 20 percent precipitation probability.
The Hope Star reports a weak upper atmosphere disturbance in the Arizona Utah area will influence Arkansas weather with showers and thunderstorms developing in central Texas ahead of the system. Rain chances rise Thursday with temperatures near seasonal normals and scattered rainfall totaling under an inch in several towns.
Season books for the 1974 Hope High School football season are now on sale at Citizens Bank First National Bank Anderson-Frazier Insurance Agency and the School Administration Building. Each book costs $8 and covers five home games. Also note the largest antique ever sold being the London Bridge in March 1968.
Joyce Ann Meggerson of Fulton will enter Saint Louis University to pursue a PhD in sociology and anthropology. A Hendrix College 1970 graduate with an MS in guidance and counseling from Arkansas State College in 1973, she has worked in Governor Dale Bumpers office and with Arkansas Juvenile Services. She begins studies in fall 1974-75.
John Henley, Hope Hempstead Chamber secretary manager, told Hope Rotary on Friday at Town and Country about a week long executive training session at Texas Christian University in Ft Worth. 187 attended as the chamber promotes civic betterment locally and within the national association including 38 foreign countries. President Gerald Keith led the session and invited Rotarians Jimmy Ligon Joe Freeman and Mike Freeman to attend the upcoming Highway Department headquarters dedication on September 4.
The Washington public schools will officially open for the new year at 8 15 a m on Monday August 19. All students including Kindergarten report to their schools with a brief early schedule and 11 30 dismissals. Kindergarten must show birth certificate and health record. Teachers start a two day workshop at Lincoln school on August 15. Three new teachers join the faculty: Dianne Sutton Mary Malone Betty Jo Lewis.
Joshua Allbright, 85, formerly of the Guernsey community, died in a Veterans hospital in Little Rock on Monday. Survived by son Thomas O. Allbright of Reno, two daughters Martha Wolf of Mountain Home and Evelyn Thomas of Tulsa, eight grandchildren, brother Felix Allbright of Marquand, sisters Dora Dees of Marquand and Kate Robison of St. Louis. Graveside services Thursday at 10 a.m. Memory Gardens, under Herndon Funeral Home.
A list of 32nd degree Masons from Little Rock and Hope attends the Albert Pike Consistory reunion. Notables include John Wilson elected class vice president, with several others named from Hope. Also noted: Richard Jay McCormack enlisted in the USAF after high school. Russell McBride to be featured in Who's Who 1973-74 and aims for Red River Vo Tech. Charles Ray Cox to be featured in Who's Who and plans Hendrix College pre-med studies.
President Ford backs a budget restraint and a compromise health insurance plan, while House leaders press to finish the session by October. He forecasts detente with Russia, renewed ties with China, and Middle East peace, with a push for strong privacy laws.
Spring Hill schools plan to begin the 1974 75 year on August 27 with a schedule including faculty meeting, student registration, short class days August 28 and full days August 29 and 30. Health records and birth certificates are required for kindergarten enrollment.
The Federal Trade Commission reported 1973 cigarette sales up 4 percent from 1972, the fifth rise in a row since 1968. Low tar cigarette sales surged 40 percent in the same period, marking the largest jump since the surgeon general warned of smoking hazards a decade ago.
