The National Weather Service reports showers ending tonight across Arkansas with remaining thundershowers Southeast area from the Great Lakes to Tennessee and Mississippi. Warm days and mild nights continue through Wednesday as unsettled weather shifts.

Calvin Caldwell, Hempstead County Extension agent, spoke at the Hope Lions Club luncheon on Hempstead agriculture. He noted late planting from heavy rains, plant diseases, weed control with chemicals, ecologist vs practical views, and featured a pumpkin-laden pickup. Guests included Rachel Nunn, David Smith, and John King.
Superintendent announces kindergarten through 12 registration on Friday August 31 for the 1973 74 year. Buses operate on regular routes and times. School begins Tuesday September 4 with a full day schedule. Parents of kindergartners and new first graders should bring health records and birth certificates if not already on file.
Mrs. Jessie Landers Avery 74 died Friday in a Nevada County hospital. Funeral Sunday at Midway United Methodist Church with Rev. Calvin Miller and Rev. Jack Williams. burial in Midway Cemetery. Survivors include husband Ernest and three sons Harold Byron and Dr. Donald, two daughters Gradie Clark and Gene Ross, 13 grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.
At the Hope Rotary Club meeting James H. Jones presented new superintendent Joe Barentine. Barentine praised his predecessor and detailed innovations for the upcoming school year including the first kindergarten program with five classrooms and a career education initiative. Remodeling at Yerger Junior High and new classrooms at Paisley and Beryl Henry Schools were noted with an August 20 opening target.
U S District Judge J Smith Henley said issues at Cummins Prison Farm and Tucker Intermediate Reformatory are administrative, not constitutional, and he will relinquish jurisdiction. He blamed low funding and staff quality while urging more Black recruitment and inmate representation on committees. He warned mail safeguards and potential contempt if retaliation occurs.
The body of Charles Bunch a 34 year old Hot Springs resident who drowned after a skiing accident on July 98 was recovered from Lake Hamilton Monday officials from the Garland County sheriff's office said.
President Nixon spent Monday evening on a Potomac River cruise aboard the Sequoia with White House chief of staff Alexander Haig Jr. The trip followed a day of working on the Watergate speech expected later in the week.
