Arkansas weighs cost of heavier truck limits on highways
State Highway Department Chief Engineer B K Cooper says the 1960s Illinois tests funded by federal and AASHTO established road design formulas used to project costs for heavier loads. Increasing limits to 80 000 pounds would shorten interstate life by about 10% and raise maintenance costs to roughly 16.5 million annually, with primary roads and bridges needing billions in upgrades.
