Statewide deer restoration in Howard County and Sylamore district, Arkansas, began with 720 acres fenced to protect a growing Virginia white tail population. Since 1944, trappers have moved 659 deer from both areas, with 555 moved from Sylamore and 104 from Howard County, under federal aid and new 1945 legislation granting the commission authority to close chosen areas to deer hunting.

Equal Job Rights Mixed Blessing at Memphis Ford Plant

In Memphis on April 11, workers especially women like Rosie face heavier wartime tasks as riveters lift heavy parts at the Memphis Mord plant. Despite calls for lighter duties or legal limits on lifting, company union rules grant seniority by sex, leaving Rosie near the top of the list for new jobs but under strain from onerous lifting. Rosies seek relief via a CIO union meeting while the plant shifts from airplane to other production.

Navy may use 74 ships for Bikini tests

Senate Naval Affairs committee, aligning with President Truman, supported holding Bikini Island atom bomb tests but debated ship numbers. Blandy said 74 vessels could be enough, with one aircraft carrier and five submarines as modern fighting ships, while 34 ships might lie outside the blast range for measurement gear. Some senators urged minimal ship loss, others pushed cancellation.
