Mickey Owen Joins Mexican League After Dodgers Rift
Mexico City April 13 Veteran catcher Mickey Owen has signed with the Mexican League after a dispute with Branch Rickey and the Dodgers. Owen, 30, will serve as catcher and manager of Torreon or Vera Cruz, with a reported $12,500 signing bonus and a $15,900 annual salary plus living expenses. He cited pressure from Rickey and Alfonso Pasquel, brother of league president Jorge Pasquel, as factors in his decision. Owen will be introduced at the Mexico City versus San Luis Palos game.
