Louis H Gers 47 of Little Rock died in a one car crash near Lehigh Arkansas on Interstate 40. Authorities said his vehicle struck a bridge in the incident reported Monday.
Fort Smith prosecutor charged Martha Mize, 30, with first degree murder in the death of an infant found Thursday in a grocery bag near the city dump. Dr. Annette Landrum's autopsy concluded the infant died from smothering and had been dead 24 to 48 hours.
The Pulaski County Grand Jury subpoenaed six more witnesses in the bribery probe. The group includes two state representatives, two former representatives, and two reporters. Subpoenas served on Gaylor Windsor Jr., Herbert Rule II, J. H. Cottrell Jr., Paul Van Dalsem, Jack Baker, and Mike Smith. The inquiry began after Windsor claimed a $1000 offer to vote for legalizing gambling in four private clubs at Hot Springs.

At Cummins Prison Farm Arkansas prisoners began a sit down strike after noon. Prison officials reported 36 white prisoners had begun a prior sit down strike on Friday ending Monday. Negro prisoners also staged a sit down on the grounds camped at the prison. Authorities said whites sought better food and shorter hours and some were placed in solitary confinement before release.
Doctors at Los Angeles General Hospital are testing a new three dimensional X ray device. Dr George Jacobson head of radiology says it can determine bullet depth in chest wounds and locate a peanut lodged in a child's windpipe.
Three Fort Smith residents John Martin Pires 45 Claudia Piles 30 and Bill Hunter face charges after a Friday raid on a Fort Smith lounge. Prosecutor Lyman Mikel filed the charges.
Hot Springs Arkansas AP Jack Digby 35 operator of Bridge Street Club arrested in a night raid by State Police. Several gambling devices seized including a dice table twenty one table chips cards and dice. Digby charged with displaying gambling devices freed on 500 bond arraignment set Thursday. Gov Rockefeller ordered crackdown on illegal gambling. Raid conducted without a warrant.
In Boston AP report, the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled draft card burning is free speech but affirmed the conviction of David Paul O'Brien for possessing and displaying the card. Chief Judge Bailey Aldrich vacated the six year sentence and remanded for a new term citing punitive motive for the original punishment.
Pulaski County Sheriff Frank Mackey said two officers were assigned to investigate the slaying of Mrs. Judith Ann Moody 24 and her two daughters Rebecca Ann and Karen Lee in a Cabot home. The killings occurred between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday. the husband John Moody was at work in Little Rock.
