By the Associated Press a weather forecast warns thunderstorms may return to Arkansas with precipitation likely across the state. The National Weather Service cites a 40 percent rain chance statewide Thursday, with tonight's chance 20 percent in eastern portions and varying showers across western areas.
Weather outlook for Arkansas calls for a strong southerly flow bringing cloudiness and warmer temperatures. Highs in the mid 70s to near 80, with 80s expected Thursday, and night lows mostly in the 50s across the state. Rainfall not reported. 24 hour temps show high 70, low 36 at the experiment station.
State Rep Cecil Alexander of Heber Springs and Mack Koonce of Pine Bluff will co chair B D Doug Brandons campaign for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor Alexander, a realtor, will be speaker pro tempore of the 6th General Assembly Koonce, who runs an insurance agency, was national vice president of the U S Jaycees In Benon Ark Police said Randy Dennis died from injuries in an April 2 motorcycle accident near Alexander after a car crossed the center line Rep Bil Alexander DeArk said he would introduce legislation to extend the Agriculture Departments authority to buy food at market prices
Grayson Spears, president of Spears Carpet Mills, outlined rapid growth since its 1971 July organization. First year sales reached 7.5 million with 150 employees, expansion needs followed as production neared one million dollars monthly, prompting plant upgrades, more docks, and an Act 9 loan vote.
Media report from Media Pennsylvania notes Tony Boyle former United Mine Workers president testified in his own defense denying any role in the 1969 assassination of union rival Joseph Yablonski. Prosecutors and defense differed on whether Boyle ordered the killing while Turnblazer testified.
Sally Hays of the Arkansas Volunteer Action Program said a statewide March survey found 694 spinal cord injury patients. Counselors from the Arkansas Rehabilitation Service will contact each to assess qualification and explain available services. The program has a $750 grant for three years, matched with $83.4 in state funds for treatment and rehabilitation.
Brice Polk Thoting 7 percent died late Tuesday in a Perrytown pea hospital. He was a World War I veteran and member of Providence Memorial Baptist Church. Survived by two sons Brice B. Thorbag de Hope and Beaborn Thomas Oakland sisters Mrs. Franklin Crane Little Rock and Mrs. Bessie Dodson Hope four grandchildren two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services Friday 2 p.m. at Providence Memorial Baptist Church Perrytown. Burial Rosehill Cemetery. Oakcrest Funeral Home in charge.
Dr Melvin A McCaw director of the African American Institute in Washington said the early 1960s black revolution failed due to lack of unity among blacks. Speaking at the University of Arkansas Little Rock during Black Emphasis Week he urged using collective minds to drive change and define black identity.
Judge Finis Odom spoke at the Kiwanis meeting at Town and Country Restaurant. He cited 2200 miles of county roads, flood damage with 24 bridges washed out last year, and rising costs for black topping. He noted a garbage dumping issue and that concrete figures on the Kiwanis Variety Show were not ready.
