The forecast calls for sunny skies and warmer temperatures today with fair skies tonight. Wednesday is expected partly sunny with still warmer readings as a high pressure system centered over Western Arkansas moves through this morning.
The bulletin reports a high pressure system moving east, frost warnings for northwest Arkansas, and overnight lows forecast mainly in the 40s with mid 60s to 70s highs. Regional temperatures clock Pine Bluff 36 El Dorado 35 Texarkana 38 Fayetteville 28 Harrison 31 Jonesboro 34 Memphis 37 Little Rock 33 Fort Smith 31. Also notes rainfall of trace at Little Rock and a 64 34 experiment station reading. A trivia note records a 1945 foxhound litter of 23 in Ambler Pennsylvania and a 1965 London cat fall of 120 feet.
The House Ways and Means Committee voted 13 12 to block increasing the oil industry tax. Chairman Wilbur Mills led the panel in opposing Rep. Karth's plan to tax windfall profits more, shielding oil firms from extra levies and preserving plowback provisions. The measure would have raised roughly $2.1 billion over 1974 and 1975 and altered depletion allowances.
All Around Town reports Staff Sergeant Johnnie D. Dougan and the 601st Direct Air Support Center Squadron at Maurice Rose Army Airfield Frankfurt Germany earned the U S Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for outstanding support of the U S Army s V Corps from June 1 1972 through June 1973 Dougan is a radio communications repairman son of Mr and Mrs Oscar L Dougan of Prescott He is a 1967 Emmet High School graduate and attended Henderson State College The piece also notes the Henson family moving to California and other local items including scholarships at the University of Arkansas Journalism Days and a Texarkana Coin Show winner
Ronnie A Barton longtime Lafayette County game warden died Monday in a Lewisville hospital after an apparent heart attack. He lived in Lewisville and served 18 years in the post He was vice president of the Southern Arkansas Peace Officers Association and a World War I veteran. He leaves a wife a son James Michael and a daughter Rebecca Ann both of Lewisville his mother Mrs Rose Barton of Magnolia two brothers Oran and Archie and two sisters Mrs George Crumby and Mrs Milton Frank along with many nieces and nephews Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday at the Lewisville United Methodist Church with Rev Joe Hunter and Rev Charles Walthall officiating Burial will follow in Wilson cemetery under Smith Funeral Home of Lewisville care
President Nixon signed a law boosting the federal minimum wage to 2.00 per hour, expanding coverage to about 7.4 million more workers. The schedule raises the wage from 1.60 to 2.0 by May 1, 1975 with later steps, while farm and domestic workers gain similar increases and youth work limits apply. The AFL-CIO praised the move though Nixon cited reservations. In Arkansas, Republic Life Insurance Co. faced suspension of its certificate of authority by the state Insurance Department with a hearing set for April 17.

Mrs Elsie Ward age 81 of Strong Ark died Monday April 8 in a Kilgore Texas Nursing Center She is survived by eight daughters including Gladys Hamiter Pauline Bailey Frankie Lee Stanley Marie Erwin Letha Lala Zelma Bailey Jo Ella Meshell and Maudie Hannah Grandchildren number 26 with 31 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren She also had four brothers Funeral arrangements by Smith Funeral Home of Stamps were incomplete and to be announced later.
Testimony links 72 year old union leader Boyle to a plan to kill Frank Yablonski. Turnblazer, who later pleaded guilty, described a hallway meeting in the UMW building in Washington with Albert Pass and others present. Pass convicted last June of murder.

Arkansas Power & Light Co may sell 1.6 million common shares at 12.50 each and issue 40 million in first mortgage bonds, the state Public Service Commission ruled. The company plans to raise about 20 million from the May sale to Middle South Utilities Inc, owner of all AP&L stock.
