Hope College to expand COVID wastewater testing with state funding
The Michigan Health Department will provide nearly 49 million dollars to 19 projects to continue COVID wastewater surveillance and variant testing. Hope College will receive over 7.5 million, the largest share, to expand personnel and supplies and to rent space at the Michigan State University Bioeconomy Institute in Holland. The program supports six counties and nine local health departments, with Hope reporting 103 follow up tests and 90 asymptomatic cases this year, and aims to detect signals seven to ten days before reported cases to enable rapid responses.

Incumbent Rick Day and newcomers Leslie Ballard and Mary Howard were elected to six-year terms on the Allegan Area Educational Service Agency Board of Education. Day has Michigan state work and former Allegan mayor roles. Ballard is a retired educator and National Board Certified Teacher. Howard spent 30 years in public education and served on Hopkins Village Council.
