Collaboration key to Native American photo trove

At the University of Michigan Clements Library a trove of about 1000 Native American images from the 19th to early 20th century is being publicly announced. Eric Hemenway, director of archives for the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians, highlights Viola Assinaway and others as proof of Indigenous presence. The collection spans 80 tribes with cartes de visites, stereographs, and government expedition photos, acquired in 2016 from Richard Pohrt Jr. and kept with care for cultural context and caution on access.
