Couple faces new charges in sons drowning death
Ottawa County detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Timothy and Michelle Koets over the March drowning of their 16-year-old son Sam in the backyard pool. Investigators say Timothy falsified prescriptions for Sam, refilled after his death, and the couple used the drugs themselves. Timothy is charged with obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and health care fraud, among others, while Michelle faces a misdemeanor count of obtaining a controlled substance by false representation. Sam Koets died after being found unresponsive in the pool. Timothy already faces involuntary manslaughter and several child abuse counts. Both suspects are free pending further arraignment in Hudsonville District Court.

Michigan Prop 1 hits year mark with few adult use shops
In West Michigan, more than a year after Prop 1 legalized recreational marijuana for 21 plus residents, many communities remain without adult use businesses. Holland voter Ricky Altamira recalls limited changes beyond some CBD shops, noting cultural conservatism on the western side of the state. Some towns like Fennville have opted in, while others including Saugatuck Township consider licensing, highlighting a patchwork rollout with statewide opt outs prevailing.

Michigan voters, local bans delay recreational pot shops
A year after Prop 1 legalized adult cannabis, Michigan towns face questions on licensing and zoning. Kent and Ottawa counties see few licenses while Grand Rapids plans to open in April 2020, reflecting a gap between voter will and local policy.
