West Michigan law enforcement adapts to marijuana legalization
Allegan County deputies report increased complaints about marijuana odors and public use in areas with tourist traffic while Saugatuck Township mulls adult use rules. Officers weigh drugged driving risks, expand DRE training, and test roadside saliva tech as THC enforcement relies on behavior and evidence rather than fixed thresholds.

Grand Haven Plans Review Of Medical Marijuana Measures
In early 2019 the council allowed medical marijuana, with the Planning Commission drafting zoning for provisioning centers processors growers and safety facilities. The City Manager said the commission unanimously approved ordinances after a public hearing and the council will review recommendations and discuss a companion land use ordinance. Community Development manager Jennifer Howland provided maps showing potential provisioning areas and 1000 foot drug free school zones around 12 schools and the public library. Mayor Bob Monetta seeks a work session to discuss the commission’s recommendations and notes from their discussions. Howland said a meeting could be arranged as the process evolves.
