Lawsuit filed to push ballot measure in Michigan
Promote the Vote petitions seek to place a constitutional amendment on the November ballot allowing same day voter registration and no reason absentee voting. The group accuses Secretary of State Ruth Johnson and the Board of State Canvassers of arbitrary signature review after rejecting 24 of 500 signatures from a July sample, part of a 3,300 signature check. The suit argues rights were curtailed and requests faster certification by Sept. 7. Judge Teresa Berg oversees the case in Detroit.
