Dark money reaches Grand Haven mayoral race
Grand Haven city councilman Josh Brugger says fliers bearing his family photos and his personal cellphone number arrived in mailboxes across the city. Paid for by the West Michigan Community Preservation Fund, the untraceable funding is blamed for a rising trend of dark money in local Michigan elections. Brugger and Councilman Bob Monetta challenge Mayor Geri McCaleb, who seeks a fifth term, in a August 6 primary that will trim the field before November. Brugger and his wife Jen have restricted social media privacy after the mailings.
