C. E. Atkinson Dies in Chicago Engineer of Ferris Wheel and Bridges

Charles E. Atkinson a Chicago bridge contractor and designer of the great Ferris wheel at the World’s Fair dies at his Chicago home after a six week illness. He left a legacy including the Van Buren street bascule bridge and other major spans. He was 48 and survived by a widow, two brothers and a sister.

The firm aims to market 40 acres in South Gary near Glenn Park Station Sanford Tubbs second addition to Gary, 137 subdivided lots near Nickle Plate railroad and near an electric line. Royal Arch Masons Visit Valparaiso Chapter 79

Inspector Glendening of Indianapolis visited Valparaiso chapter No 79 Royal Arch Masons last Thursday evening and praised the chapter. The Royal Arch degree was given to three candidates and refreshments followed. About seventy five members and visitors attended including Jacob Kramer Jr A J Newman and Otto Carlson of Hobart who arrived by auto.

Allen receives quick Hartford payout after June seventh fire

Edward Allen of Miller received a swift settlement from Hartford Insurance through Killigrew agency Hobart. The loss was paid on June 11 after an adjuster appraisal increased an initial $200 claim to $245. Gunderson’s house insured with Smith and White Agency also settled satisfactorily.

Allen Armstrong an eight year old boy in Hazleton swallowed a corn grain on Wednesday. It lodged in his windpipe and could not be removed. It traveled to his lungs and three physicians failed to extract it. The child is not expected to live.

Gary Lodge to be instituted by Indiana Grand Lodge

Joseph H. Cothery announces that Gary lodge No. 677 F and A M will be formally instituted by the grand lodge of Indiana on Monday June 20. Officers of the grand lodge are expected to attend the public ceremony at the Majestic Theatre. A banquet and grand ball may follow with Hobart lodge likely to attend in a body.

Outing in the Woods Ends With Picnic and Baseball Clash

Last Friday night the Greens and Browns hiked to a secluded woods spot near a crystal spring. Youthful spirits enjoyed a lively 14 to 10 baseball win by the Greens followed by a picnic supper, campfire music, and ice cream before returning home.
