Cost Of Oil Roads In Santa Clara County
Santa Clara County California began oiling roads in 18y2 and now has about seventy miles of such highways. The State Bureau of Public Highways reports results as largely satisfactory. Early objections claimed roads were hard to travel and damaged vehicles and clothing, but soon the surface hardened with rolling. Oil roads avoid dust and mud when beds are prepared. The cost per mile of watering valley roads averaged about $87 per season not including water wagon costs or repairs.
