Proposals Sought for New Jail Building in Hilo Hawaii

By authority the Office of the Superintendent of Public Works in Honolulu invites proposals for a two story jail building in Hilo Maui. Plans and specifications are available from the Assistant Superintendent in Hilo for a $500 deposit refundable on return of plans and bonds. Bids must use furnished forms and be sealed and endorsed Proposi for New Jail Building. Submissions due before 4 o clock on the specified day. The Superintendent may reject any or all bids. May 16 1905.

Russian Fleet Annihilated in Korean Strait Battle

Reports from Tokio and Tsingtan on May 29 say Admiral Rozhdestvensky's fleet is practically annihilated with twelve ships sunk or captured, two transports and two destroyers sunk, while Japanese losses include one cruiser and ten torpedo boats. Russian losses comprise two battleships two cruisers and a repair ship. Washington notes possible sinking of Orel and Borodino with Japanese favorable view on the battle so far.

Memorial Day Observances at Haili Church

Memorial Day is observed with closing of businesses and half mast flags. At 2:00 pm at Haili Church Hon. Chas M LeTond directs an address by Bishop Restarick of Honolulu. Members of Company D and the Hilo Band attend. Program includes organ preludes, solos, and songs with Miss Sarah Lyman as accompanist. After services, Company D marches to the cemetery for a salute and taps. Graves are decorated with small flags by the Nations Guard. Honored dead include 1, 10 Wartlett. J. D. Marlin. Militia and Band Appropriation Killed in Hawaii

Honolulu May 29 The appropriation for militia and band is killed. Representative Carl Smith found that Section 67 of the Organic Act and Army Regulations Articles 486 487 provide necessary authority. The Organic Act vests governor with power to call military and naval forces to quell riots and habeas corpus and martial law until presidential decision is obtained.

Strike at Maui Ends After clashes and firings

The Maui strike by Japanese laborers at Pioneer plantation culminated in a Saturday night clash between police and strikers in Lahaina. One man was killed and two wounded as Sheriff Baldwin ordered reinforcements from Honolulu. The dispute centered on discharges and extra provisions at the Kaanapali section, with tension rising over a Polish Jew and a Japanese contractor. All workers returned by Wednesday night.

Money Allocated for Hilo Sidewalk Improvements

Superintendent Holloway reports unexpended Treasury balances for Hilo improvements amounting to 900 for curbing and sidewalks 529.77 from road taxes and 16.26 for roads and bridges. An added 750 from the Deficiency Bill funds will be used for sidewalk work along government lots. The Hilo Road Board seeks to extend curb and sidewalks to the government lots and to improve hospital and Riverside School paths.

Fourth of July Races Highlighted by Hawaii Jockey Club

Interest grows as the Hawaii Jockey Club readies the track and grounds for the Fourth of July events. Speedsters like Racing Murphy and Bruner head the field for the one and a quarter mile dash, with Fretter TM a Burns Handicap winner. About June arrival of new coast horses, Parker Ranch ponies also expected. Morning and afternoon racing, a Papaaloa versus Hilo match for 75 dollars, and a grand ball at the Hilo Armory cap the day’s schedule.

Open Tennis Tournament Announced by Hilo Club

The Hilo Tennis Club announces an open tournament starting June 29 with multiple cups for winners. Ladies singles cup held by Mrs. H V Patton and gentlemen’s singles by Dr. Pred Irwin, with Kohala and Hamakua players expected. Silver cup offered for gentlemen’s doubles and a second cup for mixed doubles. Entries due in writing to President Siliont by the 24th. draws begin and play runs to finish. S. S. Enterprise Arrives with Mail and Passengers

The S. S. Enterprise reached harbor at daylight on Sunday carrying six mail bags and twenty one passengers mainly returning students from the coast. Notables aboard include Mrs William Matson and maid, Miss Lurline Matson, Mrs C McClellan and Miss Margarite McClellan, and several members of the Martin, Deacon, Kennedy, Mason, and Lambert families. The ship is scheduled to sail to Honolulu tomorrow at noon.

Republican Spellbinders Tour Hawaii Campaign

Russian Fleet Sighted Off Manila Coast In May Report

Manila reports sighting of fifty Russian warships on May near the east coast of Batanes, moving in a north eastern direction. The accounts place a large flotilla close to Philippine waters with unclear intentions and timing.
