Two telephone cables numbered 1150 and 4179 near Route 22 and Robert Street in Union were reported out of order Thursday night into Friday morning. The outage affected customers on exchanges 686 687 688 and 964 in Union and Hillside. A New Jersey Bell spokesman in Summit declined to provide details on duration causes or number of affected customers. Public address notices announced restoration by 2 pm Friday.

Action Promised On Flood Drainage Fix
H A Peterson district engineer of the Department of Transportation vowed direct action to improve water drainage from Route 22 into Hillside streets following the August 7 flood. At a Tuesday night Township Committee meeting, Peterson replied to a letter from Township Engineer Armand A Fiorletti detailing Hillside flood damage on Harvard Avenue Yale Avenue and Cornell Place. The Flood Committee led by Public Works Commissioner Alexander J Menza had investigated the sites and recommended raising the drainage pipes from Route 22 to the Elizabeth River.

UNICO to Host Hillside High Bonfire Rally Friday Evening
UNICO Hillside chapter president E Jonathan Bell announced the seventh annual Hillside High School Football Bonfire Rally set for Friday at 8 PM on Bristol Myers Field Hillside Avenue Hillside. Principal Anthony Avella will welcome attendees and Athletic Director Joseph Silver will introduce head coach George Dey and starting players. After the rally a bonfire will be lit and Rahway will be hung in effigy. Hillside hosts Rahway next day at Woodfield Stadium. Bell appointed Russell Reffa to chair the Bonfire Committee, with Ralph Tinessa Carmen Dill Anthony Coccia Salvatore Maddelena Frank Avella Conrad Cammarota Patsy Federico and Pedro Vejez as members.

Fallen Soldier Honored for Korean War Service
The Hill Side Township Committee will place a plaque on the Hollywood and Long Ave corner to honor Milton A. Norton Jr who died in the Korean War on September 7 1951. Mayor Ferrigno said the town has long sought to honor Hill Side residents who fell in combat and asked for a list of all local combat deaths for future plaques.
