Police Commissioner James Welsh announced a new schedule now in operation since October 16. The plan provides 12 patrolmen on duty during the evening and early morning peak hours without extra hiring or overtime and introduces a platoon system to build teamwork within the force.

Local merchants are asked not to sell eggs to minors Oct 27 to Oct 31.
Hillside Township candidate Vincent Baldassano labels Republican rival’s campaign as ignorant of municipal government. He cites contrasts on police funding, library spending, shade tree costs, and past budget votes, arguing the opponent flips positions and misstates library finances and tax-funded services. Baldassano defends 1976 budget and pledges continued service to Hillside residents.
The School Board approved allowing seniors a 20 minute open lunch by a 7-1 vote. Dr Parker dissented citing supervision concerns and claims of discrimination. The policy, set to run November 1 through June 30, will be reviewed for renewal.
The Township Committee voted to introduce a revised cable ordinance at Tuesday’s meeting. Township Attorney Al Parsonnet said the cable Vision project should be completed for Hillside residents within about 18 months after final passage, with preparations ending in roughly one year.
Edward J. Trainor, Republican candidate for Hillside Township Committee, says his Democratic opponent knew the budget was unstable and would self destruct early this year. He cites a March $103,000 state payment, notices to use funds to cut taxes, and warns of further borrowing next year.
