Fire Chief urges trimming trees and removing dead branches within 10 feet of chimneys, clearing 30 feet of flammable material from structures, and using proper spark arresters. Emphasizes water access, hose quality, and dry-season care, plus landscape maintenance and frequent irrigation to reduce fire risk.
A condensed datebook lists many meetings for October including Board of Adjustment Old Guard IVW Post 78 Knights of Columbus Flood Committee Lions Senior Citizens Ceramics Class Civil Air Patrol Mosaic Class Recycling events and various club and committee gatherings across locations such as Municipal Building Christ the King Church YMHA Community Center and Knights of Columbus Hall with times ranging from morning to evening. Organizations include Presbyterian Church Elks K of C Ladies Rotary Italian American Civic Association Shomrei Torah and B nai B rith Women with dates from October 14 to 20.
The Hillside Township Committee race featured Ed Trainor Republican Vin cent Baldassano Democrat and independent Anthony Bullis discussing taxes and meeting attendance. Baldassano touted his attendance and attacked campaign literature while Trainor defended his family choices and urged tax cuts. Bullis endorsed Kathy Kernusz for Tax Assessor and urged reevaluation of property values.

Firehouse Theatre in Hillside offers one of its last three performances of the play And Miss Rearden Drinks a Little directed by Jill Palumbo. The show centers on Catherine Rearden and a cast including Pat Jasson Mary Wernett Elaine Mulcahy and Gordon Wiener in a suburban art scene satire.
Four Hillside juveniles were arrested Tuesday evening for allegedly attempting to raise and set fire to an eight foot cross on the lawn of a black family who moved to Woodruff Ave. A detective in the juvenile bureau will sign complaints for action in the juvenile courts. The boys were released into the custody of their parents after questioning.
Hillside Times and Hillside High School junior class will run a township wide fund raising subscription drive. Juniors will solicit subscriptions door to door offering rates of 6.50 for one year 10 for two years and 14 for three years with savings up to 40 percent off newsstand. The class of 1978 can renew or extend existing subscriptions. Proceeds go to the junior class treasury. Drive begins next week.
