State Senator Nelson Stamler of Union rules himself out as a candidate for delegate to next year’s constitutional convention. He sponsored the convention bill but says active lawmakers would risk feathering their own nests and undermining the court’s aims.
Ten Hillside residents receive $200 tuition aid grants under Union County’s County Tuition Aid Plan. Grants reduce Union County residents’ tuition at Union Junior College by 50 percent this year. The program, adopted by UJC Cranford and the Union County Freeholders, marks the county’s first entry into higher education under the 1962 County College Act.
Rita and Joe Loeb, German-born residents living in the United States for 18 and 13 years respectively, share how Thanksgiving holds meaning for their family. Rita survived Berlin's final battles with war injuries and Russian medical aid, while Joe served in World War II unscathed. The board and county officials will review architectural sketches for the new county vocational building in Scotch Plains on November 29. Humanik is a former Hillside Board president entering his ninth year on the local board.
Richard E. Lawrence 20 of Il Coe Aye was killed when a car plunged into Greenwood Lake near West Milford on Saturday night. He was thrown from the vehicle and struck a tree trunk, suffering a broken neck. The car stayed upside down about five feet of water, twenty feet from shore. A Hillside High School graduate of 1964, he worked as an auto mechanic at Franklin Auto Body Shop. Survived by his mother Mrs Helen Lawrence and sisters Mrs Raymond Pochopin Christine and Valerie Lawrence.

Monroe Ackerman is chosen Hillside 1966 mayor by Township Committee, succeeding Mayor Robert Diamond. A Chicago graduate, he has lived in Hillside since 1956 and serves on the committee since 1961, planning to continue the progress and economy program. Ackerman resides at 177 Windsor Way.
Three Hillsiders will be intimately involved in financing a new 1 million dollar science building at Union Junior College Cranford. Plans and specs are prepared by Elsasser Miller. UJC has a 307 thousand dollar federal grant under the Higher Education Facilities Act. Dr Kenneth C MacKay says trustees will chart a fund raising campaign. The joint meeting opens with a buffer supper at 6 pm in the Campus Center.
Detectives investigate a Saturday morning home invasion on the second floor of Mrs. Helen Esse’s residence at 60 Bauer Terrace. The 60 year old homeowner described a slim, approximately 30 year old Black man who brandished a gun and demanded money, leading her to surrender her pocketbook containing four dollars. In a separate item, Dani Jel and Julia McClure Hirvryka report the birth of a son at St. Elizabeth Hospital on November.
