Hillside voters approve a $500 pay raise for patrolmen in the Police Department and back an $800 assessment exemption for homeowners 65 or older with income up to $5,000. Both referendums pass decisively in every district.

The Hillside Woman s Club hosts separate department meetings this week. The American Home Department meets at 101 Conant Street at 1 30 p m Tuesday November 15 for gift wrapping demonstration chaired by Mrs John Ciasca. The Fine Arts Department gathers at 164 North Avenue November 22 from 10 a m to 3 p m to craft decorations for the Christmas party hosted by Mrs George Dover Mrs Henry Nulton and Mrs Schwartz. Members are asked to bring a sandwich as dessert and coffee will be served. The Welfare Department held an all day meeting at 325 Wayne Terrace Union to prepare for the December 6 bazaar hosted by Mrs Williard Cupit and Mrs Thomas Dwyer.
Planning Board to consider converting the corner lot at North Broad street and Williamson avenue into a single parcel with frontage of 279.42 feet and depth up to 262 feet. The site would be used for a Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company grocery, with Carmen Monaco confirming zoning and use. Also noted: a Bergen Mall Paramus poll on Port Authority investigation showed 1,082 in favor, 530 against. Steve Goldhor predicted Kennedy to win big, carrying 40 states, from London.
Dr Karl H Berns NAEs assistant executive secretary told High School P T A members last week that education in the United States surpasses Europe. He spoke on Education at Home and Abroad. Mrs William Hess treasurer presented and the budget was approved. Mrs William Tinschmidt announced the Fall County Council meeting in Berkeley Heights attended by Mrs Isadore Manheim Hess Gillmore and Zipper. Delegates to the 60th NJ Congress of Parents and Teachers at Atlantic City were Mrs Tinschmidt Mrs George Schaefer and Mrs Manheim. Present for one day sessions were Mrs Solderships and Mrs Zipper.
Hillside children craft mad hats for a November 16 show at George Washington School auditorium at 7 pm. Sponsored by the PTA the touring Don Coyote Children’s Theatre presents Crazy Days In Wonderland with Herbert Herbert as clown and Esakawata MC. Tickets available at the door or from Mrs Heifech or Mrs Cohen.
Representatives from Hillside Newark Elizabeth Union County and the State Highway Department met in the Municipal Building on Thursday to discuss steps to keep main routes open during snowstorms. They cited past winters where traffic clogged roads and stranded travelers, with officials proposing designated snow streets where parking is banned and vehicles require skid chains or snow tires.
Cupit and Miller extend congratulations to Democratic victors and thank supporters. They express gratitude to voters and friends for efforts on their behalf.

Tuesday’s Hillside election produced mixed results with Congresswoman Florence P Dwyer holding her 6th District seat while losing Hillside. The county swung Republican reclaiming the Freeholders board from Democrats who held it last year. Party gains likely tied to a national Nixon surge in a close county vote.
Hillside High School received a flag at a Capitol ceremony. Principal Ruhl L. Custer accepted the gift for the school on behalf of B'nai B'rith Hillside Lodge. Harvey Stone, Board of Education member, looked on as the flag will be raised on Veterans Day. The award highlights the home room with the highest academic average during the current marking period.
Democratic candidates dominate with 93 percent turnout. Sen. John F. Kennedy defeats Nixon 69 28 to 39 43 and Case bests Thorn Lord 51 83 51 19. Dwyer loses to Jack Dunn 55 00 to 46 53. Carlin O'Brien and Dalziel win 61 00 to 36 00. Local winners Schleifer and Mancuso carry 10 of 15 districts. Cupit and Miller win five.
St. Catherine's Church theatre group will stage Cole Porter's Anything Goes on November 19 to 21 at 8:15 p.m. in the school auditorium North Broad Street. John P. Kaelblein Jr directs a cast of 40 with Edward Heffernan and others as principals. Advance tickets at St. Catherine's Rectory. Rev. Edwin Paulmann executive producer. Police Chief Voelk says officers may take off-hours municipal court time for testimony in drunken driving cases.
Members of Alpha Delta Kappa, the international honorary sorority for women teachers, met at the Dorothy Dennis Restaurant in Elizabeth last week. They announced plans to attend the state Licensing brunch on Friday, November 11 in Atlantic City to support the New Jersey Education Association Convention and to aid the Hillside High School Scholarship Fund. Attendees included Jean Levine, Jeanne Simonet, Frances Ehman, Marguerite Downer, Evelyn Schueler, Lida Aronson, Phyllis-Brogan, Rose-Stahnten, and Edna Doll.
After a two year pause Drama Artists will return to Theatre 150 on White street to stage The Rainmaker with date to be announced. Open casting runs Thursday and Friday November 10 and 11 at 7 30 p.m. at the White street playhouse. Producers William Weller Ronald Gianet tino and Leonard DeMunde invite others to visit and discuss other theatre roles. The company last produced Pierre by William Inge to strong acclaim.
The Sinai Sisterhood sets final plans for its 26th annual donor supper on Monday December 5 at the Sinai Youth Center. The November 14 meeting at Esther Berkowitz Hall, 1531 Maple Avenue, will organize hostesses Mrs. William Bernstein, Mrs. Joe Berger, and Mrs. Sam Berkowitz for the event.
Union County Tuberculosis and Health League launches its annual Christmas Seals drive with delivery planned Monday November 14 to Union County residents. Honorary chairmen Mr and Mrs Harry A Devlin and Vincent J Warkala lead the campaign from Mountainside with Hillside chairs Mrs Emmet T White and David H Doremus assisting.
A Thanksgiving dinner dance is planned by the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday November 719 at the War Memorial Buildings. A drawing will also take a prize.
