Hillside teachers urge salary revisions with a proposed 50 percent sick leave boost and pay raises. The Hillside Teachers Association seeks higher minimums and maximums across four, five, and six year scales to curb turnover and retain top staff.
Three principals from George Washington Saybrook Morris Hillside Avenue and Harden-Locker present a proposed salary schedule to the Board of Education. The plan ties pay to years of service, with top earners at $12,900 and others rising from $10, etc. Edna Doll Calvin Coolidge would gain to $10,750 with five years.
A new shopping palace opens Monday at 433 Fabyan place Irvington replacing the Gould and Weberhardt plant. The 68 department store features a 6000 square foot food service with the largest meat counter in the country and attractions including a travel agency pet shop laundromat and a baking on premises department. Six Hillside juveniles were arrested Saturday by detectives Mason De Prospo and Miner Vino for a rash of burglaries dating back to the year but were released to their parents pending juvenile action.
North Broad Street motorists face 30 mph from Newark line to Ridgway Avenue and 35 mph from Ridgway to Looker Street, after Board of Freeholders approval. Speed limits were previously cleared with the State Highway Department. Also set an 85 mph limit on Conant Street full length, and named Arthur J. Seale as permanent repairs man and Anthony Moriella acting Roads Superintendent.
Hillside officials announced a meeting chaired by Township Committeeman John A. Desch to plan snow clearance and traffic flow for Newark Elizabeth area. Representatives from Newark Elizabeth Union Hillside and Union County will discuss snow removal sanding parking bans one way streets and mandatory snow tires or chains. The Hillside municipal building meeting is set for Thursday November 3 at 2 p.m.
New Jersey U.S. Senators Republican Clifford P. Case of Rahway and Democrat Harrison A. Williams of Plainfield visit Hillside this weekend. Case attends the Republican open house at the College Inn on Yale Ave Sunday November 6 at 5 p.m. A 3:30 p.m. reception precedes it. Williams appears at a Democratic cocktail party and dance hosted by Committeeman Max Schleifer and Charles Mancuso at the War Memorial Building on Sunday November 5 at 8 p.m.
Local officials Groh and Lillie say a proposed police wage rise of 500 dollars costs the average homeowner less than a penny a day. With typical Hillside dwellings under 18 000 dollars, the tax rise would be about 3 dollars annually. The measure seeks a non binding referendum to gauge public opinion before the 1961 budget in a town where patrolmen earn 5 700 dollars and many have left for higher pay. The outcome may influence races for President and the U S Senate in the 1960 election.
