Democrats win tight township race and gain control

In a close General Election Democrats Charles Mancuso and Albert Parsonnel win seats on the Township Committee over Republicans J Arnold Witte and Arthur Ferguson. Mancuso carries eight districts, Parsonnet six, Ferguson eight, with all totals, turnout at 8 180 of 11 797. Independents and public questions vote totals noted. Senior Citizens tax deduction passage approved 4 740 to 1 090.

Fire damages $8000 at Modern Music Inc building

Heavy smoke filled the Modern Music Inc premises at 1464 North Broad St as Hillside firefighters battled a storage area blaze. Quick action by Jack Goldberg and secretary Miss Jean Helberg helped raise alarms. fire controlled in about an hour with damages estimated at $8,000 and cause undetermined.

Hillside Week Theft Reported and Related Incidents

A string of incidents includes a break in at Cahill Electric Inc on Long Ave with several items stolen, purse snatching by two girls on Hillside Ave, a car theft and recovery, a man held on grand jury charges, and multiple assaults and vandalism reports. Also noted are a dog bite, a faulty oil burner fire response, and egg-throwing at two dwellings and a community house.

Weather airman earns MAC flying safety honor

U S Air Force Sergeant Joseph Dino Jr of Hillside New Jersey was recognized for helping his unit to three years of accident free flying in the Military Airlift Command flying safety award program. He serves as a weather equipment repairman with the 58th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron at Kirtland AFB New Mexico. The RB 57 missions span Arctic to Magellan Strait, totaling over 27000 flying hours without an accident in the period. Sergeant Dino is a 1964 East Side High School Newark graduate and earned a 1968 BA from Bloomfield College. His wife is Shella Takahashi.

Zients Honored With Dinner and Sword of Peace Award

Bernard B. Zients president of Gimbels New York will be honored at a December 13 testimonial dinner at Short Hills Caterers New Jersey. He will receive the State of Israel Sword of Peace Award for his humanitarian work and support of Israel’s economic development. Absent details of other attendees include Abraham Feinberg as special guest and notes of past recognitions from ADL and other groups.

Hillside Little League Receives Columbian Award

The Italian American Civic Association honored Hillside Little League at its sth Annual Dinner and Dance at Mountainside Inn on October 31. Mayor Ferrigno praised the league while William Beattie accepted the Columbian Award for leadership and service to local youths.

Mrs. Louise Muccina reported a home break in at 833 Irvington Ave last Wednesday night the rear window was used to gain entry. Stolen items include a silver service a mink stole valued at 500 a black coat 70 a charm bracelet and a gold ring 75. Hillside Avenue School attended a 4 Mathematics Conference at Jersey City State College October 24 1970 with displays from pupil projects and teacher demonstrations on additive inverses geometry and compass constructions.

Hillside Conservation Group Forms New Committee

Alfonso De Filippo is chairman of the Hillside Conservation and Beautification Committee renamed from Hillside Beautification. Elroy Moss is recording secretary and Michael Ladines is corresponding secretary. The group will inspect township lots with Samuel Katz and focus on open space, beautification, air and water pollution, and waste disposal.

Hillside student elected secretary of Pi Lambda Phi

Donald S. Novy of Hillside has been elected secretary of Pi Lambda Phi at LaFayette College. Novy is a junior biology major, on the Dean's List, and recipient of the Porter Bible Prize. He participates in intramural sports and serves in Hillel Society leadership roles.
