Witte Charges Private Liquor Trucks Used Town Property

Newark public works chief J Arnold Witte alleged two liquor trucks were parked nightly at the township garage behind gates during a strike against a Newark firm. Police Commissioner Marvin Corwick said the trucks were moved after a call, and he saw no official authorization. Witte urged accountability and an apology for using taxpayer money to store private vehicles in a dispute.

Township Receives 3153 Grant for Alcohol Enforcement Gear

Hillside police gain $3153 from the National Highway Safety Bureau under the Alcohol Enforcement Program to fund TV camera equipment and a Breathalyzer. Materials will aid arrest scenes and training, film suspect examinations, and support court presentations to speed drunken driving prosecutions. The system will also help study traffic flow on Rt 22, the parkway, and the planned Rt 78.

Gold In Garbage Day scrap drive planned in Hillside

The Committee announces a November 4 scrap drive from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Public Works building 274 Hillside Avenue across from the Municipal Building. Items accepted include newspapers aluminum cans foil pie plates tin cans glass bottles and jars. Call for pickup if needed. Proceeds go to a township conservation project.

Democrats pledge to represent all amid Hillside election

One day after winning full Hillside township committee control Democrats Charles Mancuso and Albert Parsonnel promised to represent all citizens equally regardless of party. At the Nov 4 committee meeting they sought to ease fears from GOP campaigns warning of a total Democratic takeover. Parsonnet, elected to fill the unexpired term after the death of L Lute Share, secured the seat.

Kiwanis Touts Drug Education For Hillside Youth

The Kiwanis Club of Hillside plans a youth education program on drug abuse targeting early teens and pre teens. The effort builds on Operation Drug Alert, with 3500 Kiwanis clubs involved nationally, distributing millions of booklets and preparing a new comic about peer pressure.

Fund Drive Mailing Sparks Union County Controversy

Before the election day, the Union County Board of Freeholders oversaw a fund drive. Ferrigno noted Mt. Carmel Guild literature would require mailing or delivery to township homes. Republican freeholders allegedly removed the literature from envelopes and offered to mail it themselves but could not cover postage, inserting a leaflet listing their names and including homes of Witte and Ferguson.

Israeli Vocalists In Town Concert

A gala concert is planned for Sunday Nov 15 at 7 p.m. in the Hillside Jewish Center high school auditorium announced by Herman Schiffman. Jo Amar with his troupe and Rabbi Schlomo Carlebach will perform, with Amar noted Israeli star and Carlebach a famed composer and singer. Hillside Pop Warner seeks funds for jamboree trip

An appeal to Hillside citizens and industry asks for financial support to send the Cobras Pop Warner football team and over 100 players and cheerleaders to the National Football Jamboree in Atlantic City.
