Newark public works chief J Arnold Witte alleged two liquor trucks were parked nightly at the township garage behind gates during a strike against a Newark firm. Before the election day, the Union County Board of Freeholders oversaw a fund drive. Ferrigno noted Mt. Carmel Guild literature would require mailing or delivery to township homes. Republican freeholders allegedly removed the literature from envelopes and offered to mail it themselves but could not cover postage, inserting a leaflet listing their names and including homes of Witte and Ferguson.
