Police reject two year pact prompts commissioner backlash

Police Commissioner James Welsh blasted the PBA for a double cross after the union unanimously rejected a two year contract offer. The negotiating committee led by Vincent DeMaio had agreed to recommend a package with two six percent base pay raises and enhanced fringe benefits, causing anger among city officials.

Hillside Italian American Civic Association Blood Drive Set

The Italian American Civic Association of Hillside hosts its second annual blood drive June 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Club House 16 Hillside Ave. North Jersey Blood Center conducts the drive and aims to collect 75 units to aid donor families and leukemia patients.

Elizabeth City Council Extends Rent Control for One Year

The Elizabeth city council kept the current rent control ordinance in place for an additional year and set a June 9 vote to review revisions and a taxi ordinance affecting Newark International Airport rates. The meeting also approved parade contracts and noted a Hillside Township stance opposing a Senate bill on police and fire retirement ages.

Officials Seek State Ok For Emergency Road Access

Township officials traveled to Trenton on May 19 to appeal a state ruling blocking an emergency access road linking Spring and Gardner Streets to John St. They argue the project would improve fire and ambulance access, citing a 55 foot dike relocation and a $10,000 cost, while noting prior DEP upholding the denial.
