Mayor Robert C. Kirkpatrick issued a proclamation designating the week of May 24 to May 30 as Poppy Week and urged residents to buy poppies sold by veterans' organizations. The funds support rehabilitation work by patients in veterans' hospitals.

Miss Nancy Carson of 411 Yale avenue and Miss Joan Hayes of 425 Yale avenue win scholarships from Smith College and Rider College. Carson receives 2400 dollars toward tuition. Hayes gets 900 dollars. Carson is Library Council and Hiller staff. Hayes is National Honor Society member and Girls’ Athletic Association treasurer.
Free anti rabies vaccine for dogs will be given from 7 to 9 p m tonight at the War Veterans Memorial Building on Liberty avenue and Memorial drive. Owners may attend tomorrow night at Municipal Headquarters 1284 North Broad street and from 10 a m to 1 p m Saturday at the Township Garage on Baltimore and Central avenues. Clinics are sponsored by the local Board of Health in cooperation with the State Department of Health which supplies the vaccine.
Hillside Heights Civic Association voted to form a committee with the Calvin Coolidge School P T A to address vandalism at the new addition. Deputy Chief Paul Korlesky will be asked to have police patrol the school grounds during summer. The evening feature included a film and song fest hosted by Mrs Cirrito and Mrs Barbiere.
Mrs. Helen Pilipschuk of 1414 A Liberty avenue was fined $25 by Magistrate Sidney Birnbaum for disorderly conduct after striking neighbor Mrs. Gloria Arnold of 1414B Liberty avenue with a garden trowel on May 13. Arnold sustained bruises requiring medical treatment.
The CYO of Christ the King Church will hold its final meeting of the year next Monday and plans a party and dance at the church. The group roller skated at Dreamland Skating Arena in Newark Monday night with Rev. Gerard B. Whelan as advisor.
At a Elizabeth County Courthouse meeting the Mayors Had-Hinding Committee urged immediate legislative action to remove control of Newark and Teterboro from the Port of New York Authority and place them under State Bureau of Aeronautics. They asked Gov. Driscoll to reconvene the Legislature, halt the Newark passenger terminal, and keep the airport closed until safety measures are approved. The group voted to form a committee with an aviation expert and aviation law expert, pending municipal approval, and backed hiring David Behncke as aviation specialist.
Ninth District Civic Association will request the Township Committee to survey traffic at Conant Street and Liberty Avenue to decide if a traffic signal is needed. The motion was adopted last Thursday at Albert Rothbard's home, 1069 Voorhees Street. Plans for a June 1 Echo Lake Park picnic were also discussed, with committee members Harriet Alpert, Sidney Birnbaum, Jean Giordano, Rothbard, and James McTernan involved.

Hillside High School announces Dwight Kirkpatrick and Joseph Setz Jr as recipients of the James A. Oneil and Hillside Kiwanis Club awards to represent at Boys State in New Brunswick on June 15. Dwight, 16, son of Mayor and Mrs. Kirkpatrick, is active as class president, Eagle Scout, band and track member, and Phi Alpha Sigma member. Joseph, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Setz, co editor of the Hiller sports staff, former JV track athlete, and active in student government, was chosen for scholarship and citizenship by teachers and Principal Ruhl L. Custer. They will attend a one week program organizing and governing themselves.
Nearly 100 residents replied by yesterday morning to join an organization opposing planes from Newark Airport. Col. Harry I. Luftman announced a future meeting to plan action and possibly invite James G. Moore to advise Cedarhurst on an ordinance limiting flights to reduce danger and noise. Luftman aims to make Newark a shuttle hub to a farther main airport, not a total shutdown, while excluding military defense use.
