Township committee passes health and safety ordinances
The Township Committee approved an anti menace to health ordinance requiring the Board of Health to notify property owners of dangerous conditions. Public Works will clean sites, charge costs to owners, and remove weeds and debris. Also adopted were a dwelling repair and demolition ordinance and a Fire Prevention Code amendment. Youth in Government Day saw student officials including Ivan Punchatz and Ira Guttman. Memorial Day parade planned for May 30 with community groups participating.

Operation Clean Up To Sweep Through Town

Auto theft and assorted city incidents reported in Hillside

Broad St Gas Station Robbed In Daylight
A tall slim Negro about 25 robbed the Hess Gasoline Station at 1484 N Broad St of 120 dollars at 4 35 p m in daylight. In the station office were three employees including Donald Varney Ronald Alsieux and Walter Benson when the man entered and demanded money with a gray pistol. He fled toward Newark in the rain after warning the staff to lie down. Police issued a teletype seeking the suspect described as wearing a gray fedora gray suit jacket white shirt and light gray trousers.

Explosion Shatters Glass At 5kil Corp Warehouse
An oil burner ignition caused a boiler explosion at the 5kil Corp Warehouse 1240 Central Ave breaking windows and scuffing a parked car owned by Diane Kopensky at 649 Wyoming Ave Elizabeth. Firefighters responded to the blast and to a later car fire on North Ave. Damage limited to a rug on the floor.

Blaze Threatens Homes In Liberty Ave Area
A smoky fire in a two story concrete block and stucco building on Liberty Ave Blay St Herbert Ave and Gard Ave threatened two new two family dwellings under construction. Firemen ventilated the roof with holes cut in the structure and used wire lines while masks were worn due to heavy smoke. Traffic rerouted as hydrants provided water and firefighters moved cars to safety. Damage extent unknown and a dog was rescued from the scene.
