Hillside Officials Eye Pool Fee After Property Owner Resistance

The secretary of Hillside's Board of Assessors, Sidney Englander, told the Township Committee that about six commercial property owners refused access to the board's appraiser for the tax collection program. They are asked to appear May 17 to explain. The committee rejected a $75,000 Hillside Industrial Foundation pool proposal, noting a fee would spoil the pool’s gift purpose. Mayor Henry Goldhaw said admission charges conflict with the spirit of a free gift pool for those who cannot afford to pay. The panel questioned the pool’s summer-only use and limited reach among residents, and doubts about the pool’s value. A separate local note recounts a teacher-bulldozer operator mortgage case and income misstatements seen in a school board context.
