The Hillside library launches a Sunday four hour pilot starting March 14 to assess demand. Initial Sunday drew about 270 patrons who borrowed 418 books with 13 new registrations. Staff will monitor patronage as the board weighs permanent Sunday hours.
Township clerk Louis Dischler reminds the public that dog licenses for 1971 were due February 1. Owners delinquent may face fines from 2 to 50 dollars or a 10 day jail term or both.
Four persons were arrested at 7 50 p m last Friday at 1600 Maple Ave for possession and sale of drugs. Marilyn Fayertag 23 of Irvington Joseph 21 of Campfield Ave and Nell Van Wattegen 24 of Secaucus and Donna Augustine 21 of Maple Ave faced charges including growing marijuana possession and sale. Detectives Milburn and Messana with patrolmen and a police matron conducted the raid. Bail ranged from 25 to 3500 with appearances set for April 29 in Municipal Court.
A smokey fire at 124 Virginia St. started Wednesday from a defective electric wire in the Luciani residence. The family escaped before firefighters arrived. the blaze confined to the rear cellar and required entry with air packs, booster lines, a hydrant connection, and a smoke ejector. Deputy Chief Marsnick and Captains Muench and Lamond led the scene.
Two youths fled a Stop and Shop at 1605 Maple Ave after a robbery at 12 52 p.m. last Thursday. A pistol was used to threaten manager Samuel Matthews as cash from two registers was placed in a brown bag and the pair ran toward Gruman Ave toward an unknown destination.
Patrolman Alots J. Stier reported two 16 mm motion pictures were stolen from his parked car at police headquarters. The films Attacked and Security of the Home belonged to the Newark Police Academy and were to be shown to civic groups. value not known.
G A Vaughan, chairman of Hillside Industrial Association transport committee, urges HIA reps to attend a 8 PM hearing on April 18 at the Municipal Building. The request calls for continuing Public Service Coordinated Transport Bus Route 10, the only service for all Hillside industries near Long and Central Aves. He asks HIA to canvas workers for hardship reports if the bus is eliminated.
The Hillside Sportsmen's Club dedicates all proceeds from a charity affair for Sam Zakovic, injured deer hunter paralyzed after a Maine accident. Four hundred tickets sold out for the Saturday 7 30 p.m. event at Farber's Grove Union, with Fiorvanti announcing the capacity crowd and apologies to those turned away. Zakovic is a long time Hillside member and is active in state and county sportsman groups.
Hillside officials, aided by the Humane Society, report rising stray dog incidents. A town dog wardens tour finds most dogs unlicensed or unleashed with only one lone dog captured. officers caution owners to license and leash animals to avoid penalties up to 350 dollars or ten days in jail.
Andrew Lazarick, 49, of 24 Vine Street, climbed a guard rail on the Central Ave overpass and leapt from the viaduct over the Lehigh Valley Railroad. He was injured with possible pelvic and left ankle fractures and taken to St Elizabeth Hospital. He refused to explain his actions.
The Second Annual Dinner honoring Con vegation Ahavath Israel of Newark was held at the Jewish Education Center 330 Elmora Ave Elizabeth. Attendees enjoyed a 6 pm cocktail hour and smorgasbord followed by an 8 pm prime rib dinner with entertainment by Yeshiva Brass conducted by Manny Greehel. Judge Robert Diamond served as toastmaster. Speakers included Mayor Marvin Corwick Rabbi J Hecht and Rabbi Eli Carlebach. Women’s Division chairs were Mrs Philip Schectman Mrs Ira Schectmen and Mrs Samuel Gelman with Judge Diamond as honorary chairman.
