Open Campus and Smoke Policy Discussed at Hill Side High

Hill Side High School’s March steering committee meeting debated open campus rules and a possible student smoking lounge. Proposals included four hour in school time, lunch period freedom with return, and student accountability for unscheduled time. A survey of township views and subcommittee plans were announced.

Hillside Spring Festival to feature school musical theatrics

Christ The King School students present a musical titled Spring Festival in the school auditorium on April 1 and 2 at 7 30 PM with tickets on sale at the school office. Additional notices report a Jewish Center dinner postponement and other local police incidents including thefts break ins and assaults across Newark East Orange and Union counties with varied losses and arrests.

Patsy Ferrigno Elected Chairman Of Planning Board 1971

At the Planning Board reorganizational meeting Patsy D. Ferrigno of 203 Ryan Street was chosen chairman for 1971. A Hillside resident for 44 years he is a father of two and grandfather of four. Ferrigno works as a Prudential Insurance stationery engineer and belongs to the Service Engineer's Society and Hillside Democratic Club. He was the first all state Hillside football player in 1933.

Rat Killing Patrol Targets Vietnam Camp Rodent Invasion

Lieut. Affsa leads a rat kill patrol at Camp Martin Cox in Bear Cat Republic of Vietnam. The mission covers the 222nd Combat Aviation Battalion area as four footed rodents are eradicated over a five month program led by the unit.

Rat control program halves bites on Route 22

Lieut Emil Affsa of Hillside launched a rat control program in October while assigned to the 222m CAH Medical Section. Rat bites dropped to zero within a week and have since remained rare. Affsa, a Rutgers 1969 agriculture graduate and ROTC alumnus, received a battalion commendation for the effort. He is married with a seven month old daughter and resides with his parents.

Police Hurt In Accident On Highland Ave

Patrolman Kenneth Lull and Patrolman Haswall Donahy, both 32, were injured on Tuesday March 23 when their prowl car was struck on Highland Ave near Belle ylew Ter. They suffered back shoulder and knee injuries and were taken to St Elizabeth Hospital by municipal ambulance. The other driver Morris Adler, 61, of 1466 Liberty Ave, received a summons for failing to stop at a stop sign.

Chakowski a 25 year old Newark man and guard at Plessy Corp was indicted by a Union County Grand Jury on arson and attempted arson charges tied to fires Dec 24 25 and 26 at Plessy buildings maker of airplane parts The indictment lists seven counts for arson and attempts with four counts for attempts and three for fires Fire officials said the damages were minor no injuries and Chakowskis bomb threat report came three hours before the first blaze

Eight Children Witness Hold Up at Stop and Shop

Eight children aged eight to sixteen escaped injuries when a store robbery occurred at Stop and Shop on Maple Ave. Two masked men, about 22, forced a cashier down, took cash from two registers and wallets totaling $145, fired a round into the floor, then fled toward Grunman Ave in a yellow car. No injuries reported.

Hillside Rotary Boosts Scholarship Fund by 5000 Dollar Gift

The Hillside Rotary Club gave a kickoff gift of five thousand dollars to Hillside High School’s Scholarship Fund at a meeting at Hillside United Presbyterian Church. The fund’s assets total about sixty one thousand dollars with nine thousand in cash and securities. Board expansion and broader fundraising were approved, with plans for a townwide annual membership drive and inviting women to join the board. next trustees’ meeting is April 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the high school.
