A late 1969 mayoral committee report urged a strict air pollution control code for Hillside. It backs appointing Angelo Bonnano as Director, assigns open burning and vehicle exhaust controls, and calls for a municipal air pollution hotline and improved reporting by officials.
Township committee voted that a need for senior housing exists and directed the state be notified. The resolution marks a first step toward housing, with seed money possible if funds are granted, and does not commit the township to the project.
The Italian American Civic Association holds its March meeting Monday March 23 at 8 p.m. in the College Inn with Dr Anthony Avella as guest speaker on new programs and future education plans. Guards needed for Hillside Pool Commission interview night March 26 at 8 p.m. at the Municipal Building. Jay P Scherb bowled a 300 in a 661 series for Hillside Bnai Brith 1514. Bernard Palmer of Gamblers Anonymous to speak at Hillside Womens Club meeting. Sisterhood of Sinai Tareth Chaim hosts a crazy hat show March 23 with prize awards. Fire Commissioner LateShare to be honored at Hillside Jewish Center dinner April 5 at Elizabeth Jewish Center. Firemen shut off water on 150N Broad St last Wednesday after a leak. Joseph J Jacobs, 27, arrested on warrant for fugitive from Rock Island. $100 stolen from Frank Rozanski after entry to his Liberty Ave apartment last Tuesday.
Students and staff hold a two hour meeting to study suggestions from last week. A Student General Association committee may revise discipline and detention rules while other groups set criteria for hall passes. Principal John Kulikowski notes scheduling questions and room arrangements must be resolved to implement revisions. Came Lyons was arrested for drunken driving after a collision with a parked car on Liberty Avenue.
The Union County Unit of the American Cancer Society aims to raise 5500 during the 1970 Crusade to fund research education and patient services. Co-Chairmen Mrs. John Witte and Mrs. Ann Diamante encourage community support, noting the unit’s overall goal of 160000 and offering contact details at 512 Westminster Avenue Elizabeth.
The township committee adopted a 3.5 million dollar 1970 budget raising the tax rate per hundred to 8.17. The increase funds municipal costs 43 points and school 29, with the rest to the county. School Crossing Guard Association protested a promised 200 salary raise, while guards received a 100 amount and ten unused sick days pay.
Hillside patrolman Arthur D. Seale 22 was struck by a Newark pursuit car and a store window was broken on Maple Ave. James J. Howe of Union led Newark police on a chase from Elizabeth Ave to Maple Ave before his vehicle stopped after hitting a parked car at Shoporama. Bruce E. Jones 19 was arrested at the scene for reckless driving license issues and leaving the scene.
About thirty-five organizations respond to the PTA Presidents Council call for a township meeting at 7:45 p.m. in the Board of Education library at 195 Virginia St. Speakers include Police Chief George Shelbourne and narcotics bureau members Asano and Gordon Millburn. The goal is to form a township wide committee to combat drug abuse.
Township Clerk Louis A. Dischler said registration for the June 2 primary ends at 9 p.m. April 23. Voters may register at his office from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with extended hours 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on April 20 21 22 and 23. Nominating petitions must be turned in by 4 p.m. on April 23.
After four hours with a state appointed mediator the Hillside Education Association and the Board of Education ended mediation with no significant movement. A fact finder will be appointed by the Public Employees Relations Commission. The association cites limited negotiation on salary as part of broader issues and calls for a cooperative relationship.
