Approximately 12 500 residents of Hillside attended two local schools on Sunday to receive the polio vaccine, about 60 percent of the community, with further doses planned. Commissioner Diamond praised volunteers and noted additional opportunities on March 5 at Hillside High School, plus doses on April 12 and May 24 to complete the three dose protection.
The Hillside area politics show two Republicans entering the Township Clerk race as local party strength grows after recent successes. The campaign scene hints at possible clashes among factions before the May filing deadline, with control of the township government again at stake in a presidential year turnout.
Commissioner Robert Diamond announced the Police Traffic Bureau has completed plans to designate certain Hillside streets as one way. Schley Wainwright and Leslie to Winans will align with Newark flow, with Purce Buchanan Tillman Chapman Lee Princeton Rutgers Columbia also considered. Residents will receive advance notices before signs are installed.
The Planning Board approved a nine lot subdivision of Mundet Cork Corp. property along Route 22 with frontage of 150 to 200 feet and depth about 300 feet. A new 40 foot road named Mundet Pl was to be built. final plots and plans by Saul Cantor Inc. for Oakland Plaza Inc. of Union were required. Letters will be sent to Newark Elizabeth Irvington and Union to arrange a conference on Hillside area common issues.
Mrs. Robert Diamond of 404 Schley St was named Hillside Community Chairman for the 1964 Cancer Crusade Drive by Charles E. Lawson of the American Cancer Society. She has led prior drives and aided Mothers March on Polio and United Fund efforts, with active PTA and community roles.
The Hillside Ambulance fund drive committee holds weekly meetings each Monday. The fund drive starts on April 1, 1964. Bill Haines proprietor of Liberty Lounge at 1458 Liberty Ave Hillside donated his hall for meetings. Charles Pavlak vice president of the Squad serves as chairman of the fund drive.
In Elizabeth New Jersey three of five Union County residents received the Sabin Oral Polio Vaccine on Sunday. Officials called the event an unqualified success citing volunteers at 51 sites and media cooperation. About 292,836 people or 59 percent of the county’s population took the first of three doses. Make-up Sunday is set for March 8 for those who missed their chance.

Szarko’s Liquor Store at 1817 Liberty Ave, HN advertises beers and coolers. The notice lists contact code 0659 WA 83-1495 and mentions “ines Liquors” and “For Hire” in a terse classified style.

William P Hourihan of Esso Research and Engineering Co is named general chairman of the 1964-65 United Fund campaign for Eastern Union County. President Robert E Goldsby lauds Hourihan for leadership in last fall’s drive and gifts division work. Hourihan cites 32 agency appeals and urges residents to volunteer solicitors. The fund supports 32 agencies in Elizabeth Hillside Linden Roselle and Roselle Park. Hillside Camera Club meets Monday at 8 p.m. in the Hillside Ave School Art Room. Charles Mueller leads a workshop on Night Magic.

A high school trade and industrial training program may start next September pending Hillside Board approval. Eight people were injured last Wednesday when a car crashed into a Somerset Bus in the eastbound lane after allegedly being cut off. Driver Jerry B. Louzeaux, 38, of North Plainfield, suffered a fractured hip, left wrist, facial injuries, and nose lacerations, and was hospitalized in Newark in fair condition. Six bus passengers and the driver received treatment and were released. Names cited include Russell Skidmore and several passengers from Scotch Plains, New Providence, Springfield, and Union.

President J Franklin Rein hard will study buying a tercentenary flag at the Municipal Building. Plans are under way for the barber shop concert on May 1. A committee meeting is set for May 10 at Walter Schorr's home, the concert chairman.
