Groh Withdraws as Tracy Enters Race for Union County GOP

Henry G. Groh announces personal reasons will keep him from seeking the Republican nomination for the area committee. Charles S. Tracy moves into the race after Monday club meeting at 166 Long Avenue. Tracy, longtime Union County Republican leader, previously served as municipal chairman since 1959 and helped revive Hillside GOP activity.

Winners Named in Hillside High Thrift Essay Contest

Harvey W. Peace, vice president at National State Bank of Elizabeth, announced the winners of the eleventh annual thrift essay contest for Hillside High School students. Senior winners were Narty Courage, Marcia Levine, and Martin R. Berlanstein. junior winners Stuart Sirkin, Frank Cheriff, and Char lene Gray. sophomores Rosalie Lessin and Joseph Umansky. freshmen Jill Galamb Linda Marin and Ronni Kalman. First prizes were $50 savings bonds, second $25 bonds, third $10 savings accounts. Judges included Mrs. Donald E. Gillmore, Hillside PTA president. Mrs. Elizabeth McCraith of Hillside Business and Professional Women's Club. and Mrs. John G. Walsh of the Woman's Club of Wilside. A brochure of first-plate essays was distributed with March bank statements, Peace said.

Bishop to Preach at Franklin Memorial Church Service

On Sunday March 15 at 1 pm Bishop Lloyd C. Wicks of the New York Area Methodist Church will preach at Franklin Memorial Church for the dedication of a bronze Memorial Tablet gifted by Richard N. Berke feldt. The tablet reserves space for more names and begins an endowment fund. The church’s 132 year history notes Bishop Wick will be the second bishop to preach in this pulpit.

Hillside raises bids for pool and cancer drive co chair

Mrs Peggy Roche will co chair the 1964 Hillside Cancer Drive aiming for a 5000 goal in April. The township also bids on a $275000 municipal swimming pool project at Central Avenue Playfield with 28 firms submitting seven bids across Contracts A to G, Mayor Ackerman noting potential total costs over 500000.

Groh Honored On Bank Anniversary

Henry G. Groh vice president of the National State Bank Hillside Office marked 20 years with the office. He joined Hillside Trust Co. in 1928 and transferred to the national bank after 1939. Groh served as VP for a decade and stayed in that role after the 1962 merger with Elizabeth’s bank. He holds multiple local community roles. A Hillside Tavern Owners Association meeting is set for Wednesday March 18 at 7 pm at Englander's Tavern North Broad St.

Democrats Endorse Ackerman and Dischler for Township Posts

Hillside Democratic Club endorsed Mayor Monore Ackerman for township committeeman and Lewis A. Dischler for township clerk at a Feb 26 meeting at Hillside State Bank. The show of unity aimed to support the pair in primaries. Former Mayor Max Schleifer presented travel slides from abroad including Madrid and Tel Aviv and staged a rescue demo by the Madrid fire department.
