Hillside Firemen Race in Bicentennial Boat Contest

Hillside firemen finished third in a six mile New York harbor race against Clark Elizabeth and Union departments. The crew lost footing after five minutes, had eight of ten rowers, started at Front Street Elizabeth, and were steered by coxswain Bob Krezl with 12 rowers including Ortstein Caswell Fer rara Cupido Issler DiLeo Heller Hanlein Bat taille.

Free Diabetes Screenings to be Offered June 16

The Union Township Board of Health and Memorial General Hospital sponsor Project Safeguard offering free diabetes screenings on Wednesday June 16 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Doctor E. L. Imbleau Child Health Station on Vauxhall Road. Medical officials stress early detection can reduce diabetes risks and urge residents over 40 or with risk factors to participate.

Library to host Bicentennial tea in Hillside

The Hillside Public Library will host a Bicentennial tea on Sunday June 27 from 3 to 5 p.m. The Bicentennial Committee and the Historical Society of Hillside are honored guests. A books presentation by the committee and a colonial cake tea will be served. An ongoing Hillside historical exhibit will be on view with updated pictorial displays.

Hillside budget strained by high hourly legal fees

Township credits labor negotiator Gerald Dorf at 70 per hour with draining the legal budget. About 6000 hours of Dorf work since January, 4000 paid, prompts emergency appropriation talks to cover Hillside’s attorney costs for the year. A June 15 meeting will decide final budget actions.

Food stamp aid available at Municipal Building event

Residents may apply for food stamps at the Municipal Building on Wednesday June 16. Bring rent receipts utility and medical bills. The service is provided through the cooperative with the food stamp program Elizabeth. The local welfare department assists older persons and answers questions on weekdays.
