Controversy erupts as Hillside pool opens with nepotism claims

The Hillside pool opening triggers a heated fight over Pool Commission actions. Horace Mahon, pool manager, recommended his two sons for lifeguard posts, bypassing other applicants. A refreshment stand owner faced a health license summons, and a staffer living outside Hillside was hired amid rules requiring local residency. The Township Committee rebuked the commission for nonapproved hires, with calls for resignations and tenure limits. Mayor Wovsaniker defended nepotism comparisons, while others urged changes and openness. The committee learned of a delayed recommendation process and questioned fairness and proof of impropriety. Details emerge ahead of a formal follow-up.
