Sixteen Hillside Residents Receive Rutgers Degrees

Sixteen Hillside residents were awarded degrees at Rutgers University commencement. Names include Joseph Amrose, Sheldon Axelrod, Barry Becker, Sanders Bernstein, Senta Bormann, Carl Clawans, Elaine Cooperman, F Edward Dea, Nathan Fink, Paul Jansak, Abraham Lipsky, Norman McNulty, Sondra Radter, Robert Schachman, Ivan Scharer, and Paul Zeigler. Ambrose earned an Air Force commission. Becker to receive one after the 1953 summer camp.

Westminster land row nears amicable settlement on schools and parks

The Board of Education and the Recreation Commission spar over land in Westminster for a new school and for recreation, with the Union County Park Commission opposed to diverting land from the Elizabeth River Parkway. Columbia Master’s Decree 2 Honors Herbert S Alexander

Herbert S. Alexander son of Mr and Mrs Alexander of 1568 Maple Avenue received his Master of Arts degree at Columbia University 199th annual commencement in New York City He is a Hillside High School graduate with a Brown University BA and plans to pursue a PhD in experimental psychology next fall He is among seven students chosen to study or continue a doctorate in Columbia’s Psychology Department.

Parkway Project on Conant Street Starts

The Union County Park Commission began clearing the former Kean property along Conant street with a bulldozer to prepare a section of the Elza beth River Parkway. Plans include a baseball diamond two picnic areas and parking. The spokesman announced the Ashbrook Golf Course opening on Friday June 5 at Raritan Road Scotch Plains.

Officials Urge Hvasta Release From Czechoslovakia

A town committee votes to seek John Hvasta’s release from Czechoslovakia after reports he was imprisoned for espionage and later escaped. Copies of the resolution will go to President Eisenhower, the State Department, New Jersey congressmen, and Czechoslovak authorities. Deny Undue Noise At War Memorial

War Veterans Memorial Building Association leaders told the Township Committee that investigations found noise complaints unfounded. They cited occasional loudspeaker or orchestra music heard with windows open but said speakers are prohibited. Police reports supported the lack of fault. Puppet Show for Paralysis Fund Earns Two Dollars

Fieldhouse Dedication Promises Civic Festivities Saturday

The Recreation Commission announces a two part dedication program for the Central Avenue fieldhouse on Saturday June 6 led by Peter G Humanik superintendent of Recreation with I Lute Share as arrangements head. Morning events for elementary students precede a 1 30 pm dedication and a 3 pm all girls softball game between the Linden Arians and the Dover Marauders from the National Girls Softball League. The Linden Arians are state champions for 14 years.

Four Will Get Newark State Degrees

Four Hillside girls will receive Bachelor of Science in Education degrees from Newark State Teachers College at commencement in the college auditorium Thursday June 11 at 4 p.m. Dr. Eugene Wilkins announced. The graduates are Elisabeth Rand y, Anna Weissman Hirschmann, Lucille V. Lorusso, and Viola C. Mulhall with addresses in Newark and Hillside.
