Fifty four bicycles were inspected and safety cards issued Saturday by the Hillside Kiwanis Club Children’s Committee at Calvin Coolidge School. Two bikes were rejected for loose seats and missing rubber grips. Parents are urged to correct safety defects. Plants Win Awards In Safety Contest
Four Hillside factories received merit certificates at the first annual State wide Taterplant Safety Contest awards dinner held Tuesday at the Crystal Ballroom, Elizabeth. Coco Steel Products Corporation, Emerald Company Inc, Buchanan Electrical Products Corporation and Overhead Door Company, Inc were honored for hours worked without accidents in the first quarter of 1953. Deputy Director George Krueger of the State Bureau of Engineering and Safety presented the awards, with Percy A. Miller Jr. and aides in attendance. Henry Goldhor leads a county safety program planning committee for next fall. Frank W. O’Brien of A C Supply Company serves on the committee.

Best Safety Patrol To Receive Award At Coe Avenue School
A plaque from the New Jersey State Safety Council will be awarded Friday evening June 5 at 8 p.m. in the Coe Avenue School to the top school safety patrol. A committee of local PTA leaders and officials has watched patrols since January and will select the winner. The Hillside Safety Council initiated the project in cooperation with the Board of Education. The program includes hypnotist Dr Herbert Charles and remarks by N O Schneider with refreshments provided.

The Volunteer Emergency Corps reorganized its staff at Dr. William F. Wacker’s office. Resignations included Police Chief Paul Korlesky and Fire Chief August Daviet. Lt. Harry Scheutzle will replace Korlesky. Captain William Hamilton will take Daviet’s post. Eight of fourteen positions remain to fill. a booster squad will join staff with three members. The corps will affiliate with the Civil Defense Council, and by-laws were adopted. Regular staff meetings move to the first Monday monthly. next on June 8. The annual meeting is set for the first Monday in January.
