Excessive temperatures last week caused discomfort for Municipal Building staff during upgrades. The old systems were removed Tuesday and a new water tower installed Wednesday by The Conditioning Co of Newark for 3900. The new A C system started operating by the weekend and workers and police, plus library staff, suffered heat until fans could be borrowed and used.

About 900 Lionel Corp workers returned to work after a 26 day walkout tied to a 2 year contract. Local 430 of the IUE AFL-CIO halted work at midnight April 30 with talks breaking May 17 and resuming May 26. An overwhelming union vote approved the deal at a Coronet Irvington mass meeting. Maintenance staff resumed Thursday and the remainder returned by Tuesday.

The Hillside PAL solicits used clothing through bins at the Hillside PAL Building Acme and Shop Rite Markets. Proceeds fund building operations and youth activities for 10 to 20 year olds with roller skating available afternoons.
