Tarnoff, Hillside Republican candidate, urges town to support the Aldene Plan citing five years of work and 2100 feet of track, with completion expected next spring. He argues the plan will alleviate metropolitan congestion and push for a Hillside station with parking, citing bus route No. 10 curtailment as motivation.
Mayor Diamond accuses the Hillside Homeowners Action Association of deception as he cites a press release about Ferrigno and Ferrigno appearing at a June 9 candidate rally. He states prior commitments prevent his attendance and questions the association's independence amid the Hillside GOP campaign context. A police captain rotation and Union zoning decision for a Maxon Ventiac showroom are also reported.
Township Committee last Wednesday night approved the sale of the Road Department garage on Central Ave to Norm Man Pastor of 1457 Orchard Ter, a building contractor, for $108,000 by a 3 to 1 vote with Police Commissioner Monroe Ackerman abstaining. Mayor Robert Diamond opposed, suggesting the property be retained for future use and cautioning that adding to the Police Main maintenance Garage could overcrowd the area ahead of a planned second Municipal Swimming Pool. The committee named William C. Martucci as architect.
A Marine Corps veteran with two Purple Hearts narrowly avoided a tripping incident during a Memorial Day parade when a child on a bicycle cut in front of him while leading Marines. The event recalls a past invitation for youngsters to decorate and ride their bikes at the parade rear, with awards for best decorations.
Douglass College in New Brunswick honored Hillside students who earned certificates from the women's college of the State University. Vivian Josloff of 1240 Robert Street Hillside won a pre nursing certificate as part of the ceremony with a reception following the certificate presentations.
Hillside detectives investigate a Ca podanne Electric Co tool theft at 1272 N Broad St. Tools valued at 2277.25 were stolen after entry through a ventilator window and carried over a five foot fence. Also under inquiry a home break in on Grumman Ave with a gold charm bracelet stolen from Evelyn Hirschman. Patrolman Rupp reported a disorderly arrest, Robert Grzymala, 19, of Irvington at 5:15 a.m. Saturday.
John Seylar of 403 Princeton Ave will receive his B S degree from Newark College of Engineering on June 10. He has attended evening classes for eight years and plans to return in the fall for a master's. His wife and parents will attend. his two daughters Linda and Patricia cannot.
Peter G. Humanik announces that Hillside Recreation is accepting applications from youths aged 16 to 18 for Connie Mack Baseball League participation. Returning players from last year must also apply, though screenings may differ. Application blanks are available at the Recreation Office in the Municipal Building.
Bristol Myers employees from the Hillside division sent a 700 contribution to Bloomfield College, helping reach the 1964 1965 Annual Fund goal of 35 000 with six weeks left in the college year. Franklin L. Pellegrin chairman Newark attorney noted hopes for a 40 000 total up 33 1 3 percent from last year. Funds support scholarships loans library books and the science classroom building.
Township committee members Monroe Ackerman Anton Vit Jr and Joseph Raim met with State Highway Department reps at the Municipal Building Friday night to discuss transferring New Jersey Central Railroad trains to local tracks If service resumes it would be the first passenger service since May 31 1948 when Lehigh Valley Railroad cut local service The highway reps will restudy altering the Central Ave to Salem Ave or N Broad St connection to the Hillside Overpass A pedestrian grade crossing at Long Ave is proposed and the Public Affairs Commissioner urged an underpass at the gate plus rebuilding the Pennsylvania Ave footbridge knocked down last year.
