Tax Collector John C. Pozar announces the Tax Office will be open Monday evenings on July 19, 26 and August 2 from 7 to 8 p.m. for taxpayer convenience. Payment for taxes is due for the third quarter.
Adolph Alexander, 69, owner of Alexander's Confectionery at 1568 Maple Ave, was found beaten and robbed at his store last Thursday. He had a swollen lip and a nose wound, could not explain the assault. Witnesses saw two or three teenagers enter shortly before. He was treated at St Elizabeth hospital.
Residents on Woodruff Avenue and four other Hillside Streets petitioned against township plans to assess homeowners for curb and resurfacing projects. They warn higher taxes will hurt fixed incomes. officials cite safety and long term savings, with public bids to start if ordinances pass.

Adna EB Doll, longtime Hillside Avenue School principal and Hillside resident, resigns to become curriculum coordinator for New Jersey environmental education. She has directed camps, led Earth Day events, and planned large school activities, with a career spanning Croton to Vermont and Ghana to Kenya. Her resignation read at the Board of Education meeting.
Mrs Joyce Polidoro 30 of 1348 N Broad St was cut on the left hip after being struck by Leonard Weintraub 45 of 88 Greenwod Drive Millburn while crossing Liberty Ave at Long Ave. She was taken to St Elizabeth Hospital Elizabeth for treatment. Mrs Marta Csoltko 28 of 174 Baltimore Ave bumped her head on the windshield of a car driven by Gerza J Csoltko 29 of the same address during a collision on Liberty Ave at Bloy St. She was treated at St Elizabeth Hospital Elizabeth for a head injury.
A 15 year old local boy was caught by Patrolman Charles W. Ritz last Thursday afternoon as he attempted to drive a stolen truck. The vehicle, reported stolen from Durex Corp. at 1409 Chestnut Ave, had two youths aboard and rolled onto the grass before escaping into a weed filled field. one youth escaped.
At the township committee meeting on July 6 seven women were appointed as traffic guards for summer school hours. Mesdames Shirley J Kochen dorfer Roslyn C Klarfeld Doris Klinko Dorothy C Rust Stephanie M Sabia and Rita Loeb will serve until July 30 at $2.10 per hour.
