Hillside Fire Cuts Power and Destroys Two Yards

A massive $800,000 blaze in Hillside destroyed two lumber yards and knocked out power across the township and part of Irvington. Firefighters from ten companies fought the flames on a humid day, with Public Service crews restoring power by evening and residents frantically preserving refrigerated food as the disaster area cleared.

Fire Closes Bank Drivein at Liberty and Hillside

Lumber yard fires across the street forced the National State Bank drive-in and walk-up windows at 1357 Liberty Ave to close after 3 PM. Patrons were directed to the Hillside Office at 1320 N Broad Side, open 4:30 AM to 4:30 PM, while firefighters battled Hillside's Worst blaze and lost power.

Di Buono Set for Swearing In as Juvenile Court Judge

V William Di Buono will take the oath on Monday July 8 at 9 am as the first full time judge of Union County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. The ceremony is in Superior Court Judge Walter Hetfield II's chambers on the first floor of the County Courthouse rear in Elizabeth. The public is invited following his nomination by the Governor and approval by the State Senate.
