Hillside 50th anniversary events mark town celebration

Hillside observed its 50th anniversary with a park program at Union County Park on Conant Street drawing about 6,000 by nightfall. Events began at 1 p.m. with athletic contests overseen by the Recreation Commission, Mayor John A. Desch addressed contestants, and ribbons were awarded by Township Clerk Louis A. Dischler. A band of 20 musicians led by Carl Gerardo performed, and Gov. Richard Hughes may meet officials to discuss airplane hazards over Hillside.

Master Plan Contract Authorized For Hillside Town

Hillside township approves a master plan contract with Alvin Gershen Associates costing 27,600 to study 19 factors from tax bases to water supply. Two thirds of the cost covered by federal funds. local share 9,200 plus a 500 state admin fee paid over five years.

Apartment Approved In 3-2 Vote By Township Committee

In a divided 3-2 decision the Township Committee approved a 28 unit apartment at 216 Hullside Ave. Menza's Coal Co. of Newark proposed the project. Dissenters, Attorneys Ackerman and Diamond, said the variance lacked legal merit and would violate local zoning. The panel also approved two other variances, set salaries for police and firemen, and scheduled a July 16 public hearing on a policemen training ordinance.

Director Leonard Earle elected to Union County liquor group

Leonard Earle of Hillside was elected to the Union County Retail Liquor Stores Association board at the annual meeting held at Townley's in Union. Officers installed included Milton Barnett as president, Harry Fink as 1st vice president, Sam Balich as 2nd vice president, Albert Peterson as secretary, Alexander Madonna as treasurer, and Pat Mazaforo as sergeant-at-arms. Mazzucco announced plans for the Martha Memorial Golf Tournament on July 1 at Shackamaxon.

Hillside official sworn as Union County Juvenile Court judge

Former Hillside magistrate William Di Buono took the oath as first fulltime judge of the Union County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. The five year term was read by County Clerk Henry Goulton with Gov. Hughes appointment confirmed by the State Senate. A large crowd attended with speakers including Judge Walter Hetfield and Judge Milton Conford acknowledging the ceremony.

Devin Appointed To Magistrate Vacancy In Union County

Acting Magistrate Louis Devin of 10 Williamson Ave was appointed by Superior Court Judge Walter Hetfield III to serve as Magistrate of the Municipal Court until Township Committee picks a successor. Devin, of Devin & Devin law firm in Newark, took oath before County Judge John E. Barger. He is married with two children, Donald 18 and Jene 16.
